Having won a penalty shoot out against Barrow last week in the Lancashire Senior Cup, it’s back to Premier League action tonight for the under-23s at Aston Villa.

Our unbeaten run came to an end two weeks ago when top of the league Fulham beat us 2-1 at Leyland and now we take on an Aston Villa team who currently sit third in the table, three places above us. They have one point more but do have a game in hand.

Having lost our first three games, we’d been on a remarkable run of seven games without defeat until the Fulham loss when we played well against clearly the best team we’ve faced so far this season. We’ll now be hoping to get back to winning ways with this the first of two games this week with Stoke due at Leyland this Friday.

Villa have scored 28 goals in their ten games but did benefit from a big 8-0 win at Stoke back in September. Their more recent form has not been as good. They drew last time out at Reading having lost the two previous games against Sunderland and Southampton.

This fixture last season ended in a 3-2 win for us. Both Joel Mumbongo and Rob Harker (pictured) scored but Villa came back twice, the second time in the first minute of stoppage time. That looked to have earned them a point but Max Thompson converted a penalty in the fifth minute of stoppage time to win it for us.

Tonight’s game at Villa’s Bodymoor Heath Training Ground kicks off at 7 p.m.
