Our under-23s are back at Leyland this afternoon when Stoke City are our visitors in  Premier League 2 Division 2 and having beaten them in the away game in early December we will be looking for our first double of the season.

Stoke come into the game in some form having won their last two games. It will be their fourth league fixture in 2021 and they were beaten 1-0 in the first of them at Leeds. They’ve since recovered with successive home wins against Middlesbrough (2-0) and Wolves (3-1).

Overall, they are having an average season with seven wins and seven defeats but that’s good enough for them to sit currently in third place in the table. We are eighth but just three points behind them and with a game in hand.

That game at Stoke in December ended in a 1-0 win for the Clarets with Lewis Richardson  (pictured) scoring the only goal of the game midway through the second half. We have since won two games, drawn one and lost one.

It is likely to be a young team today. Given players such as Anthony Glennon, Richard Nartey, Josh Benson and Joel Mumbongo are being involved with the first team, and given we have the FA Cup tie tomorrow against Bournemouth it is likely most of those players won’t be involved this afternoon.

Kick off today at Leyland is 2 p.m.
