When the under-23s beat Middlesbrough on Friday of last week it took us up to fourth place in Premier League 2 Division 2 but we then had to wait until Monday to see how many places we might drop.

The answer was none, and we go into this week’s fixtures three places higher than we were last week, this after a run of five games without defeat. Nottingham Forest were one of the three teams we passed and they were losing at Fulham at the same time. The other two, Newcastle and Stoke played on Monday with Newcastle going down at home to Wolves and Stoke drawing at West Brom.

Southampton have been bottom all season but have finally moved ahead of Birmingham having won successive games following a start to the season that left them without a win in the first seven. Both wins have been away and both with a 1-0 scoreline, this recent one at Reading.

Sunderland were just above them but they were winners again, a surprising 3-2 win at Aston Villa with former Claret Will Harris scoring his second hat trick of the season. He’s now the division’s leading scorer with nine.

Fulham have moved three points clear at the top but leaders Manchester City have seen their advantage in Division 1 reduced to one point after they were surprisingly beaten at home by Spurs.

They are now ahead of West Ham and Arsenal who had the biggest wins of the week. Arsenal were 4-0 winners against Everton but West Ham beat Manchester United 6-0, a good result against a club where Ole is at the wheel.

This week’s fixtures in both divisions kick off this evening and end on Monday with the Clarets to play Birmingham at Nuneaton on Monday.

The player featured this week is midfielder Ben Woods who has been playing alongside Mark Helm in recent games.
