The under-23s are in action this afternoon with West Bromwich Albion our visitors with the game, as last week’s 3-2 win against Middlesbrough, to be played at Curzon Ashton.

We haven’t played West Brom as yet this season and both home and away games against them were scheduled for this week, with us due at Birmingham County FA in four days time, but the away game has now been rescheduled for next Monday at the same venue.

The home games have certainly been packed in this season. After today we will still have seven Premier League 2 games to play but all but one of them, against Norwich in mid-April, are away from home.

Today will be the first time we’ve played West Brom at this level in the league but we came up against them two seasons ago in the Premier League Cup, drawing 2-2 against them at Hednesford with goals from Marley Blair and Dan Agyei with Agyei then scoring again in the home game when we beat them 1-0 and that victory was exactly two years ago today.

It was probably the draw that was the most memorable when a very young Burnley side came up against a West Brom team that included former Claret Tyrone Mears, Conor Townsend, Rekeem Harper, Bakary Sako, Jonathan Leko and Oliver Burke.

Today’s West Brom under-23 team have dropped to the bottom of the league and sit two points behind the north east pair of Sunderland and Newcastle. It was Newcastle who beat them last Monday to move ahead of them. It was a fifth successive defeat with their last points coming on the last day of November when they beat Sunderland 3-1 on a day when former Burnley target Kamil Grosicki scored twice.

We are eighth in the table with seven points more than West Brom although they do have three games in hand.

Kick off today at the Tameside Stadium is 2 p.m.
