Under-23s suffer close defeat in opener
The under-23s couldn’t quite match the under-18s today and went down to a 3-2 defeat against Wolves at Kidderminster as we kicked off our first ever season in Premier League 2.
Last season we were in the Professional Development League while Wolves were playing in Division 1 of Premier League 2. Today we met in Division 2 on the opening day and it was our hosts who took the lead as early as the 11th minute when Theo Corbeanu opened the scoring.
Against a Wolves team that included just three English players in their starting line up, we struggled in the opening part of the game with just a couple of half chances falling to Lewis Richardson and Josh Benson.
But we were level on the half hour and then even better four minutes later when we took the lead. Lewis Richardson got the first, heading home a Ne-Jai Tucker cross and then Max Thompson, who got those few minutes in the first team at Manchester City, hit home a loose ball after the Wolves goalkeeper had saved from Rob Harker.
Harker was the player who was unfortunately credited with the home side’s equaliser in stoppage time at the end of the first half when the ball went in off him following a corner. Austin Samuels was trying to claim that one but he did get the winner in the second half to give Wolves all three points.
The game saw new recruits Marcel Elva-Fountaine and Connor Barrett make debuts from the start while the other three latest acquisitions were all on the bench with Will Rickard coming on with just over ten minutes remaining.
The teams were;
Wolves: Andreas Söndergaard, Nigel Lonwijk, Christian Marques (Cyriaque Mayounga Ngolou 64), Pascal Estrada, Jack Scott, Hugo Bueno, Meritan Shabani (Hong Wan 67), Luke Cundle, Taylor Perry, Austin Samuels (Conor Carty 83), Theo Corbeanu. Subs not used: Joe Young, Chem Campbell.
Burnley: Lukas Jensen, Marcel Elva-Fountaine, Bobby Thomas, Connor Barrett (Matty Rain 57), Anthony Glennon, Max Thompson (Chris Conn-Clarke 57), Mace Goodridge (Will Rickard 79), Josh Benson, Ne-Jai Tucker, Lewis Richardson, Rob Harker. Subs not used: Marc Richter, Ismaila Diallo.Share this page :
