Having not won a league game in 2022 until a week and a half ago at Sunderland, we made it two wins out of two yesterday with a 2-1 win against Southampton at Gawthorpe.

Michael Jackson’s team included Matěj Vydra who is on his way back to fitness from a hernia operation and a dislocated elbow; he got just over an hour in, and by that time we’d fallen behind and begun our comeback with an equaliser.

Ramello Mitchell, with his first goal of the season at this level for Southampton, opened the scoring on 17 minutes but we thought we’d equalised soon afterwards when Richard Nartey scored from a Ne-Jai Tucker corner only for the officials to adjudge that he’d fouled the goalkeeper.

But equalise we did and it was Dara Costelloe on the scoresheet again. Moving on to a ball from Vydra, he rounded Saints’ keeper Matthew Hall before netting.

Vydra was twice close to getting a goal in the second half, only to be denied twice by Hall, before giving way to Joe McGlynn. He’d partnered Rob Harker up front, another player who has been absent for some considerable time this season. Harker gave way five minutes after Vydra and it was his replacement Max Thompson who would have the final word.

Kazeem Olaigbe, their leading scorer, came close to winning it for Southampton four minutes from the end, denied by a brilliant Sam Waller save, but two minutes later, Thompson (pictured) did win it for the Clarets with a low shot from the edge of the box.

Coach Michael Jackson was disappointed with the first half performance, claiming we didn’t do the basics or put the hard yards in but he was much happier with a good second half performance.
