He’d scored the goal in the Leicester game and then, as we drew 1-1 against Arsenal, Matěj Vydra turned in arguably his best performance for the Clarets since arriving from Derby in the summer of 2018.

On this occasion it was his strike partner Chris Wood who scored the goal but both of them played a big part in the goal, along with Jόhann Berg Guðmundsson, the pressing from the three of them putting Arsenal, particularly Bernd Leno and Granit Xhaka under pressure and forcing them to make the mistakes that led to the goal.

Vydra’s performance was recognised with him winning both the man of the match and the player ratings. On a day when the top four in the man of the match mirrored the ratings, he was a clear man of the match with 45% of the vote with captain Ben Mee taking second place with 27%. Coming on as a substitute in the second half and getting involved in everything won Erik Pieters third place with 11% with James Tarkowski finishing in fourth place with a 7% share.

In the ratings, Vydra won with a rating of 7.89 out of 10, followed by Mee with 7.63. Pieters scored 6.92 and Tarkowski was fourth with 6.89 out of 10.

It brought Vydra ten points towards the Up the Clarets Player of the Year. Mee won six points with four points for Pieters and two points for Tarkowski. Those two points have moved Tarkowski back within six points of Nick Pope at the top of the table; Mee is third with 75 points, some 25 behind Tarkowski.

We are back up to date now with the Everton vote coming next this Saturday, soon after the final whistle.
