Wallace, who because of injury hasn’t played a competitive game since February, was released by Sheffield Wednesday at the end of the season as the new manager opted to reduce the size and average age of the squad.

He’s been training with promoted Wigan Athletic for much of the pre-season and he featured for them in a pre-season friendly at Tranmere last Saturday, coming on as a second half substitute for Gavin Massey in a 2-1 win. Wigan have now left for a training camp in Spain but it isn’t known whether Wallace has made the trip.

It’s three years since he left Burnley but Dean Marney (pictured) departed only at the end of last season after the frustration of not being able to force his way back into the team on his return from injury. Some time before the end of the season he was spotted with Nottingham Forest boss Aitor Karanka and a move to the City Ground looked very likely.

That hasn’t materialised, certainly not as yet, and Marney is currently training with Aston Villa, a club who are in some considerable disarray right now and having to cut costs dramatically following their defeat in the Championship play-off final.
