New Watford manager Rob Edwards got his second home win and second clean sheet since taking over at Vicarage Road and was proud of the commitment shown by his players in this win against the Clarets.

Edwards said after the game: “We were tested again and I’m delighted with the three points, that goes without saying. The character, the resilience and the unity of the players, because of the circumstances and going down to ten men in the end, I thought was excellent. That really pleased me.

“I didn’t think thee were loads (of chances) in the first half and I’m sure most would agree. I was quite pleased with how we performed. The goal came at a terrific time for us and it perhaps changed our mindset a little bit going into the second half and I thought they had a little bit of momentum in that second period, but we looked fairly solid.
“I think their first three shots were from the edge of the box on the volley, so I thought we were alright, but clearly the red card put us on the back foot. In the end, to get the victory was great because they are a good team.”

He had a word for his goalscorer and also his goalkeeper of whom he said: “He has had a very good week and we have needed him. He has been magnificent, he really has. I said this before, he is doing his job which is to keep the ball out of the back of the net, but he is doing it very well.

“We needed everyone, including our goalkeeper, tonight, as we did on Monday (at West Brom), to get something. He is doing his job, he is very professional and he is great to have around the place. He is a top professional and he is doing his job very well.”

Vincent Kompany suffered defeat for the first time as Burnley manager and he said: “Their side was very much the same as in the Premier League and I thought in the first half, we didn’t concede chances as such but we just couldn’t get into our game, and the second half was all us and we expected to be rewarded out of it, but it wasn’t to be. In this game in the first half, we didn’t have control and it took us to the second half to have control and gain some chances.

“We’ve come away from this place with nothing to show for it, and in a league with that many games, we have to make sure that we respond and go again. The difference between the first half and the second half has decided the game. If we could have continued in the whole ninety minutes then it would have been a different game. We hit the post and their keeper made some exceptional saves. Sometimes the difference is the inside of the post or the outside of the post. I see the guys improving a lot when they are playing together and we need to understand each other’s movements.”

Burnley drew a blank sheet for the first time under Kompany and he admitted: “In this game you have got to score goals, and to score goals we have to create chances but we have created enough to win games. Then you play against teams who did well last season like Huddersfield and Luton and Watford who still have Premier League players.

“We have got to get the consistency and learn about how the players fit into every position, and the relationship with other players and to integrate them. You are a few games down before you have the whole puzzle fitted and meanwhile you have to get results, but I have no doubt we will have consistent periods of success. It is just a matter of time.”
