Weather hits under-23 league
Five of last week’s Professional Development League games were called off due to frozen pitches with only four going ahead, one in the north group last Friday and three the south group on Monday and Tuesday of this week.
Sixteen goals were scored in the four matches played and one of those three matches, Bristol City v Colchester, ended in a 0-0 draw.
Millwall beat league leaders QPR on Monday which gave Crystal Palace the opportunity to go top on Tuesday which they duly did.
In the other two games, both saw big comebacks from teams who looked beaten on the road. Last Friday, in the north group, Barnsley hosted Bolton. Both teams were on 21 points, nine points behind leaders Sheffield Wednesday but three points behind the next two clubs Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United.
Barnsley took command of the game and before the half hour and raced into a 3-0 lead. But it wasn’t to be their day and Bolton, who pulled one back before half time, recovered to win the game 4-3 and move into third place.
It was a similar story at Cardiff on Tuesday in their south group game against Crystal Palace. Cardiff kicked off next to bottom but knew a win would see them move up two places. They were soon 2-0 up but Palace were chasing that top of the table place and got it, coming back to beat Cardiff 4-2.
So, with one set of fixtures remaining, Sheffield Wednesday will definitely go into 2018 on top of the league with their current six point lead at the top. In the south it will be Crystal Palace or QPR who lead the league into the New Year, depending on the final results.
We end the year with a home game against Hull this Monday. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. at Curzon Ashton.
The player featured this week is Dwight McNeil who has scored four league and cup goals for our under-23 team this season so far in all competitions.
