Wells scores winner on international return
The number of Burnley players to represent their country has increased with Nahki Wells returning to international football with Bermuda and scoring a surprise winner against El Salvador.
It was Wells’ first appearance for Bermuda in three and a half years, but he returned to Kyle Lightbourne’s team to score the only goal of the game with a 70th minute header from Reggie Lamb’s cross.
Wells, who is currently on a season long loan at QPR, said: “I haven’t been back for a while, but I knew I was returning in a bit of a rich vein of form and enjoying football again in a game that meant a lot to the country.
“I just tried to bring that enthusiasm, that little bit of experience and that little bit of difference that we needed and thankfully it paid off. I recall getting it out to Reggie and getting in the box, that’s what strikers do. I’m not fortunate enough to score many headers but when I do it means a lot. You have to be brave and I was brave, and fortunately it went in.”
The win came against a side some distance above Bermuda in the FIFA rankings in their Concacaf Nations League qualifier.
