Two new managers in the Championship come face to face tonight, just as they did at Huddersfield two weeks ago. This time it is new Watford boss Rob Edwards who will face Vincent Kompany.

Edwards was previously with Forest Green Rovers, winning promotion from League Two in his first and only season in charge before moving to Watford where he has made a good start.

He’s looking for a second home win under his charge but believes it will be a tough game given his opposite number. “Vincent Kompany is a Premier League legend and a legend in this country for what he has done in the top flight and with his national team,” Edwards said.

“I have huge respect for what he did as a player and as a man as well, because I like the way he talks. I like what he stands for and he seems like a genuine, really good person. He has made a really good start to his coaching career which I’m sure he will be really successful in as well.”

Edwards added: “They have made some changes and I have heard him talking about keeping a lot of the things that made Burnley difficult to play against throughout the years, but he also wants to bring his own stamp on things. He has been very successful with that so far in the first couple of games.

“We know it will be a difficult game. They all are because they all bring their different challenges and threats.”

In his press conference this week, Kompany spoke largely about recruitment. He said: “We’re keeping it diligent and at the same time, there’s no bargain to be had for our players who are playing at the moment. That’s paramount to us competing this season.

“There are two big parameters to take into account. I arrived here at the back end of June, and as a manager you usually get twelve months to look into players, but when thirteen are going out the door, you need to replace them. The only way to diminish risk is by having an independent recruitment process, and by making sure there are names in there which you have knowledge of and a bit of background on.”

Looking at Watford, he admitted: “If we talk about teams who have come down, and look at the turnover of all three squads, we’re in a much more delicate situation with more room for error because we’re all new, myself included. Watford are still very much a team geared up to go back to the Premier League and then try to stay there.

“It’s the type of challenge for us to have at this time of the season though, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’d prefer to go there now because we will have a very good idea of where we are with the squad afterwards.”
