We’ve never lacked belief
Antonio Conte is back at the Turf tonight as a manager for the first time since his Chelsea team beat us 2-1 close to the end of the 2017/18 season.
The last time we played Spurs, Jose Mourinho was in charge, so we’ve missed Ryan Mason and Nuno Espirito Santo, but Conte arrives having just collected his best result yet, a win against Manchester City at the Etihad.
Speaking ahead of tonight’s game, he said, relating to that win: “I want to see the same spirit, the same desire, the same will to fight. We have to continue in this way and enjoy this good result but, I repeat, we have to think about Burnley.
“They are in a fantastic moment of form. Their last result was very good, a 3-0 win at Brighton who, for me, are a very good team. They drew against Arsenal away, drew at home against United, then lost 1-0 at Liverpool, maybe they deserved more. So, We have to pay great attention. At the same time, if we want to have the ambition to stay very close in the table, we have to try to play a good game and try to get three points.”
He added: “Now, it’s another game, another plan. You know that Burnley like to play a longer ball, lots of crosses, lots of duels. We have to be prepared to fight for the second ball and defensively, we have to be strong, to pay attention for crosses, to mark well. At the same time, when we have the ball, we have to hurt them.
“Football is extraordinary, because it’s going to be different, game by game. You have to be good to prepare for the game and to understand the strengths of your opponent, the weaknesses of your opponent and then try to build a good game.”
“They showed that with their mentality in their win at Manchester City, so we have to fight for everything that we get, and we are showing the right mentality and that’s what we need to keep doing. The players are in a good place, you can see that in the performance levels and it’s good that the game has come around quick. We have a team mentality that has served us well and now we have to build on performance and strive for more.
“Performances have been strong and it’s keeping that mentality and the fearlessness that comes with these performances as you are going to need that playing against these types of opposition. We certainly showed it against Manchester United in the second half, against Liverpool and down at Brighton, who are all very good opposition and going well this season.
“These are very good players who we have come up against and now we have to build on the win. We’ve never lacked belief and I’ve looked at the players. We can win in every stadium against every club. It’s not that easy but you can still find a way of playing in the Premier League.
“It’s important because it reinforces that message of staying true to ourselves inside the camp and outside the camp. From my and some of the players experience, that gives me clarity and a foundation to reinforce the positive areas of our game.”Share this page :
