Having been beaten by struggling Peterborough in our previous game, giving them their first win of the season, we took on and beat league leaders Sheffield United and beat them 1-0 to inflict on them their first defeat of the season.

It was an experienced looking Burnley team that included CJ Egan-Riley, Hjalmar Ekdal, Manuel Benson, Darko Churlinov and Michael Obafemi, all coming back from injury and illness and the game saw all of Ekdal, Benson and Obafemi play for an hour with Egan-Riley and Churlinov completing the game.

Previously unbeaten Sheffield United looked as if they were going to keep that unbeaten record, that was until Churlinov scored the only goal of the game in the final minute of stoppage time to give us all three points.

I think it’s fair to say that Sheffield United have recovered from their first loss of the season; on Tuesday they were back in action and beat Wigan 5-1 to leave them five points clear at the top of the north group. Birmingham are now the closest to them. When this latest set of fixtures got underway, Sheffield Wednesday were second but they were without a game which allowed Birmingham, who won at Crewe to go above them.

We were fourth this time yesterday but could have gone sixth and when Barnsley won at Coventry to go ahead of us, that looked likely with Hull expected to beat Peterborough at home. Not so, Peterborough didn’t just beat them but hammered them 6-0.  It’s moved them off the bottom of the league too having moved one point ahead of Coventry.

The top two in the south group both won and both scored four goals. Leaders QPR won 4-1 at Watford and Bournemouth secured a 4-3 home victory against Swansea, aided by a Daniel Adu-Adjei hat trick. What a turnaround for Bournemouth in front of goal. I recently pointed out that they’d scored just six goals in their first seven goal. Since penning that statistic they’ve scored a further ten goals in three games.

Charlton were the big winners in the week. They beat Ipswich 5-0 and in the one remaining game, Cardiff beat Swansea and, like Peterborough in the north group, this win has taken them off the bottom of the table. They kicked off behind Colchester on goal difference but have now moved three points clear.

With a number of Premier League Cup fixtures over the next week, including our away game at Fulham in two days time, there is only one league game in the next week which means our next update will come in two weeks time.

The player featured this week, while a member of the first team squad, has to be Darko Churlinov.
