Win at Wigan sees under 21s march up the table
A week ago, the under-21s were in seventh place in the Professional Development League, but last Monday’s win, coupled with results elsewhere, has seen us move up into third place.
It wasn’t our best performance of the season, far from it, but another Joe Westley goal was enough to win it having seen an inspired performance from goalkeeper Denis Franchi.
Birmingham have moved up to second with a 2-0 win at Peterborough but Sheffield United remain top although they lost their 100% record last night when they were held to a draw at Barnsley in what were described as difficult conditions. It was a 0-0 draw too with the league’s runaway goalscorers failing to find the net for the first time.
It’s a close league right now other than Sheffield United at the top and bottom team Peterborough. Coventry are currently next to bottom but have just four points less than us.
QPR beat Swansea in the south group and that has kept them one point clear of unbeaten Millwall at the top. QPR have now won five of their six games, the one game they didn’t win was at Burnley when we were by far the better side in our 3-0 win.
It’s a tight affair to keep off the bottom. Cardiff are there right now on five points, behind Charlton on goal difference, but both Ipswich and Colchester are currently just one point clear of them.
This week’s fixtures kick off tomorrow with Colchester’s home game against Bournemouth and end with four games on Tuesday. Our home game against Fleetwood will be played on Saturday while we are travelling to Newcastle and it has been moved to Gawthorpe.
The player featured this week is left winger Tom Tweedy who joined the Clarets from Cymru Premier League club Penybont in January this year.
