Wood’s day at Southampton
Having held a 2-0 lead at Southampton five days ago we were beaten 3-2 but it might have been different had Chris Wood been awarded the clear penalty around ten minutes from the end.
Wood is back in form for the Clarets and scored the opening goal from the penalty spot, the third successive game in which he’s found the net, and his overall performance saw him come top in both the man of the match vote and the player ratings.
He won the man of the match with 35% of the vote ahead of strike partner Matěj Vydra who took second place with a 23% share. Erik Pieters, who was a real threat down the left hand side before having to be substituted just past the half hour, a spell that included the winning of the early penalty, was third with 16% while goalkeeper Nick Pope came in fourth with 12% of the vote.
The same four players took the top four places in the player ratings too. This time Wood shared top billing with Pieters who both scored 7.40 out of 10. Vydra was third with 7.02 while Pope took fourth place with a rating of 6.23 out of 10.
It has given Wood the maximum ten points towards the Up the Clarets Player of the Year with Pieters winning seven points alongside five points for Vydra and two points for Pope. Those points for Pope have now extended his lead at the top of the table to eight with James Tarkowski remaining in second place. Ben Mee looks to be the only player with any chance of challenging them and that would now take a whole string of top performances.
The Newcastle vote will be underway soon after the final whistle on Sunday while the Southampton result is below followed by the current player of the year table.
