1718 burnley james tarkowski 00 500x500When Gareth Southgate revealed his England squad twelve days ago he confirmed a place for goalkeeper Nick Pope while both Tom Heaton and James Tarkowski were placed on standby.

Tom is joining up with the squad this week but Tarkowski, who was involved in training last week, has departed with his hopes of making the 23 at an end due to the need for a hernia operation.

The news of his departure flashed up on the Sky Sports News yellow bar last night with Burnley Football Club quickly following that up with the news that Tarky had been managing an ongoing groin issue that, following recent assessment, would require surgery.

The nasty streak in me was hoping that one of the central defenders named might pick up an injury to open the door for Tarkowski but it is the other way round and he can now have the surgery required. He’s expected to be fit for the start of pre-season, scheduled for very early July.

I’m certain it won’t signal the end of his international career. He’s had an incredible first season as a Premier League central defender. He got his chance at the start of the season following the sale of Michael Keane and has never really looked back. He was undoubtedly one of our big successes in the season just ended and the England call up that saw him win his first cap against Italy was  fully justified.
