Tonight’s game at Shrewsbury in the League Cup will be refereed by league newcomer Bobby Madden but he’s certainly not new to refereeing.

Madden has joined the National List of referees this season, enabling him to referee in the lower two leagues of the Football League, but he’s refereed at the very top level in Scotland for a number of years including Old Firm derby games.

He’s also been a FIFA referee, officiating in European club competitions and international games including. A career that started with a Scottish Cup tie over twelve years ago, he was even invited in May this year to referee the Greek Cup semi-final between Aris Salonika and AEK Athens.

He moved to England in the summer for work purposes and switched to English football and, to date, he’s refereed two games in League Two, one in League One and then Port Vale v Rotherham tie in the last round of this competition.

He had a dramatic start, sending off one player from each side in his first game between Bradford City and Doncaster. There were four yellow cards in that game too and his yellow card total has reached twelve in the four games with five to home team players and seven to away team players.

In his most recent game between Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton, he carded Wednesday’s Sylla Sow and Sean Clare of Charlton.

Tonight will be his first Burnley game and his fourth official Ben Speedie too has never refereed us.
