The under-23s have played four pre-season games so far, finally getting a win under their belts with victory against Ashton Athletic last Saturday.

Today is game number five and it will be a tough game as the team builds up to the new season which kicks off against West Brom in nineteen days time.

Today will see us come up against Wrexham in a behind closed doors game at Gawthorpe and it will be their first pre-season game under new manager Phil Parkinson who is expected to give game time to his new signings Shaun Brisley, Liam McAllinden, Jake Hyde, Harry Lennon and Paul Mullin. That last name shows the intent of the National League club having persuaded him to move from League One with Cambridge after he scored 32 league goals last season in their League Two promotion season.

We’ve been playing games with a number of trialists and that could be the case again today. One who won’t be involved is Thomas Robert. He has played in the previous games but has now moved on and is believed to be training with Salford.

The team is expected to include the three new signings, central defenders Harry Williams and Jacob Bedeau along with midfielder Mark Helm who has reportedly impressed in the games to date.

The game this afternoon kicks off at 1 p.m.
