We knew the enormity of it. It was good, it was a good time to get three points and as I’ve said it is the accumulation of points that you need and it sets us on our way. There’s still a long way to go, still a lot of twists and turns because that’s what the Premier League is but it was a huge victory for us.

Usually there is a points tally to get to and we are creeping towards it. If we can get there, the Premier League is tough but to come and win here is a big result for us.

Bruce heaped praise on his goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka. “He was very good, especially second half when the corners are coming in, something Burnley are very good at, very good,” he said. “For me he doesn’t get enough praise for what he does Dychey so to come and defend it the way we did, particularly the goalkeeper. We needed the goalkeeper to play well which we did.”

The game changed with the double substitution as Bruce brought on Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin. “I didn’t think both of them were capable of playing ninety minutes but the question was whether they could make an impact and they’ve done that,” Bruce said. “We’ve been without Callum for weeks, Allan for months and you can see what they bring to the team.

“If you are a team in the bottom half of the Premier League you need your big players to be fit and healthy. For so long we haven’t been able to have that so it was good to see them. Let’s hope they can stay well for six weeks at least. We know when we’ve got people like that in the team then we’ve always got a chance.”

A disappointed Sean Dyche saw us lose a lead for the second game in succession and go on to lose the game, this time after dominating much of the play. He said: “I’m not disappointed in the performance because that was one of our more dominant performances of the season. I’m just disappointed that we haven’t got something from the game, but that’s football.

“You have to turn the key moments in your favour, which we nearly did, but didn’t quite see it off. The second goal would have been important today, and we created enough to get it, but then two relatively soft goals, one which we normally block and the second when we get too deep, has allowed them score.

“Their subs helped them and with all due respect we haven’t got those type of players fit at the moment. That’s been a challenge all season and there is a difference. We are putting on young players and trying to blood them and give them a chance and they put on seasoned pros who have been around the block a long time. That can affect a game and it did for two key moments.

“I don’t think they affected the rest of the game too much, but those key moments changed the game and that’s why those types of players are important at any given time.”

He added: “It was an odd game today, two back to back actually, and the details that we normally get right at both ends of the pitch weren’t quite there, so we need to tighten up the details.”
