The under-18s suffered a 1-0 home defeat against Leeds last Saturday and that’s seen us drop to sixth place in the north group of the U18 Premier League.

Despite the defeat, coach Tony Philliskirk was pleased with the overall performance, more so given that he’s still without a number of players. He said: “I’ve got to be realistic. We’ve got a lot of players playing out of position, and we’re still affected by the COVID situation. We’ve got ten or eleven players unavailable for one reason or another and there are a lot of players to come back so I’m going to take the positives from that game.”

He added: “We had two under-16s on the pitch starting the game and another one has come on as a substitute, and in youth football, seeing players develop is what it’s all about.”

Nothing has changed at the top of the league with Blackburn recording a fourth successive victory and that has now taken them five points clear with Liverpool only able to draw 3-3 at Nottingham Forest. Liverpool, with a game in hand, head Newcastle and Wolves on goal difference but now some way behind the leaders who won 4-1 at Stoke.

Everton went into the weekend as the only team in the north without a win, but they rectified that with a 2-0 success against Sunderland.

In the south, four teams kicked off without a win. Two of them, Spurs and West Brom put that right. Spurs beat Reading who, along with Norwich are still looking for a first point of the season.

Chelsea are the leaders in the south and, like Blackburn, have won four out of four. They were one of four teams who went into last weekend with a 100% but none of the other three were able to record a fourth victory. Southampton and Crystal Palace drew against Arsenal and Aston Villa respectively, but Fulham were beaten at West Brom.
