Youths end home programme against the champions
The under-18s go into the last home game of the season this afternoon and the opposition couldn’t be much tougher with Manchester City having clinched the title last Saturday with a big win against Newcastle United who look likely to finish bottom.
The suggestion that City’s was a big win against Newcastle is understating it; they won the game 13-0 to add to the seven goals they scored a week earlier in their previous game against Derby. It’s taken them seven points clear of Liverpool with both teams having two games to play.
We go into the game in some good form, nothing quite like City’s of course but we did hit Newcastle for eight ourselves at the start of the season. We’ve won three and drawn one of our last four games and that includes wins against Blackburn, who were in the running to win the league for much of the season, and Manchester United and they are currently third.
The results are the more remarkable with some of the players now having departed at the end of their scholarships, departures still to be confirmed by the club. Some of those players did continue to play with Will Couch hitting the headlines, scoring the winner against Blackburn and our goal in the draw against Everton.
We go into today’s game in seventh place in the table with this and an away game at Derby to come. We’ve already beaten last season’s points total too.
Kick off today at Gawthorpe is 1 p.m.
