The under-18s played Birmingham again last Saturday, the fourth meeting between the two this season. We’ve beaten them in both then U18 Professional Development League Cup and the FA Youth Cup but they’ve now done the double over us in the league.

We went in front early with a Benji Wetshi goal but Birmingham responded with three goals before Vernon Masara reduced the arrears from the penalty spot. Any hopes of drawing level were ended when in the space of four minutes we had Luca Jackson and Jack McEvilly sent off.

Having climbed to third in the table in the previous week, this result saw us drop back down to fifth with both Crewe and Coventry moving ahead of us with wins against Peterborough and Hull. And in the only other game played in the north group, Sheffield United recorded a 4-0 win against Fleetwood.

There were surprises in the south group where both of the top two lost. Leaders Bristol City went down to a 2-1 defeat at Charlton and Watford were beaten 3-1 at Bournemouth. They still have a healthy lead but Cardiff, winners at Ipswich, and Charlton have three games in hand and sit six and seven points behind Watford.

QPR beat Swansea 4-3 and that has taken them off the bottom of the table above both Ipswich and Colchester, but they’d have been off the bottom even with a defeat having started the day behind Colchester only on goal difference.

The reason; Colchester were beaten 10-1 at home by Millwall. With forty minutes gone in that game, the scores were level at 1-1 but Millwall scored three times in the remaining five minutes of the half and added a further six goals after half time. Both Kavalli Heywood and Eudon O’Boyle scored hat tricks.

There are eight games scheduled for tomorrow and a further two in midweek but we are without a game with the away fixture against Fleetwood having been rescheduled for April.

The player featured this week is Wetshi, scorer of our first goal in the Birmingham game.
