Youths held in first home game of the season
Back at Gawthorpe having played home games at the Lancashire FA in Leyland last season, our under-18s weren’t quite able to follow up last week’s 8-3 win at Newcastle with a home win against Middlesbrough although we came mightily close.
Twice in front, we had to settle for a point in a 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough’s second equaliser coming in the last minute of the ninety.
The team showed just two changes from the one that had won a week earlier. Harry Moss was given a debut in goal while we also fielded a trialist in midfield.
It took us just five minutes to take the lead with central defender Dan Sassi (pictured), now in his second year as a scholar, scoring his first goal at this level, and it was a lead we held until three minutes before half time when Max Howells levelled for Middlesbrough.
Michael Mellon, one of three players to score twice last week, restored the lead just before the hour and it looked as though we were going to win it until George Gitau scored Middlesbrough’s second equaliser in the 90th minute.
