Youths miss chance to go top
At kick off last Saturday morning, the youth team were second in the U18 Professional Development League, behind leaders Nottingham Forest on goal difference.
Any chance we had of going above them ended when Bolton scored their late winner against us but a win would have seen us go top with Forest also beaten, going down 3-1 at Birmingham. Those two results have now allowed Sheffield Wednesday, big winners against Barnsley, to go two points clear ahead of us while Leeds, who beat Crewe, are now just a point behind us and Forest with a game in hand.
Sheffield United also have a game in hand and they are now just three points behind us having beaten bottom club Hull who are not having the best of seasons. They remain bottom and will do so for some time. With only two points from eleven games, they are already nine points behind next team Barnsley.
Nothing much has changed in the south group. All of the top three, Cardiff, Ipswich and Bristol City, won. As is the case with the north group, there is one team floundering at the bottom. Like Hull, Colchester are still looking for their first win of the season. The only consolation is that with three points they are only seven points behind the next team Crystal Palace.
There are just seven games being played this Saturday, four in the north and three in the south, and undoubtedly the game of the day is ours away against leaders Sheffield Wednesday. We are taking on the team who have scored the most goals in either the north or south group and have also conceded the least number. It will be a test for us as we look to recover from last week when that Bolton defeat followed the Lancashire Youth Cup exit on penalties at Preston.
The player featured this week is left back Matty Rain.
