Youths still fifth despite defeat
An unbeaten record that had stretched five games came to an end for the under-18s last Saturday when we went down to a 2-1 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday at Gawthorpe, our first defeat since losing 3-1 at Watford eight weeks earlier.
We fell behind in the first half but equalised very early after the break from a Ben Woods corner. A week earlier Dylan Moonan had scored twice direct from corners but on this occasion Woods (pictured) had more than a helping hand from the Wednesday keeper.
A win looked more likely than a defeat for much of the second half until close to the end when we conceded a penalty when Edon Pruti, who received a red card, handled on the line.
The result has not seen us drop in the league table. Only Hull could have gone above us but they were beaten by Nottingham Forest and Forest have moved into second place although they are still seven points behind Wigan who had a comprehensive 5-1 win at Bolton. Sheffield United have dropped to third having drawn at Crewe. Barnsley are the fourth team above us and they stretched their lead over us to four points with a 4-2 win at Birmingham.
All the fun was in the south with the goals. Wigan might have scored five at Bolton but Millwall bettered that with a 6-2 win at Bristol City, but the result of the day came at Colchester who were beaten 7-3 by Cardiff. That win by Millwall has taken them to within one point of leaders Watford and with a game in hand; they could go top this week when they travel to Colchester on Friday.
We travel to Sheffield United this Saturday and no matter what the result, we can’t move up the table although both Sheffield Wednesday and Hull could go above us. We’ve still played less games than any of the other teams.
