The under-18s crashed to a 6-1 defeat at Leeds yesterday, our heaviest defeat in our two seasons in the U18 Premier League.

To put this result into perspective, it was a very young Burnley team that turned out at Thorp Arch which included just three second year scholars, four first years and four under-16s with two of the substitutes used also coming from the under-16 ranks.

We were 3-0 down by half time with Ronnie McGrath, Archie Gray, son of former Claret Andy Gray, and Luca Thomas all having scored for the home team. In the second half, Ben Andreucci made it four before McGrath scored his second.

Joe Smyth-Ferguson (pictured), who had come on as a substitute, pulled one back for the Clarets with his first goal since he bagged a brace on the opening day of the season at Newcastle although he has been missing for much of the season. Mitch Picksley completed the scoring in stoppage time to bring things to an end.

It’s the first time the youth team have conceded six goals in a game since we went down 6-2 at home against Birmingham on the very same date three years ago. Ben Woods, who is now a regular in our under-23s, and Jayden Major.

The teams were;

Leeds: Harry Christy, Cuba Diboe (Mitch Picksley 54), Connor Ferguson, Joe Littlewood, Cian Coleman, Marten Spencer, Ronnie McGrath, Joseph Snowdon, Archie Gray (Ben Andreucci 59), Keenan Carole, Luca Thomas (Scott Godden 78). Subs not used: Darryl Ombang, Jay Buchan.

Burnley: Charlie Casper, Ollie Sweeney, Tosin Olopade, Nathan James, Trevon Bryan (Jack Bates), Sean Etaluku, Joe Bauress, Kade Ratchford, Ruairi Behan, Ryan Tioffo (Sonny Pickup 50), Rohan Vaughan (Joe Smyth-Ferguson 61). Subs not used: Jon Vilar Robinson, Lucas Wane.
