I read about it in one of those free magazines you pick up in a pub months ago, same mag had an article about our very own Rocky. Look forward to reading the book, have read his autobiography so hope this will be just as interesting.

Re: ARTICLE: Bob Lord set for summer return
Been waiting for this like a kid for Christmas.
For months and months each time I've seen Mike Smith on the Turf I've badgered him as to when the book will be completed and ready for release. If the new book comes even close to his Tommy Boyle book then it will be well worth the long wait.
Grateful thanks to both Mike and Dave.

Nice of the authors to release it on my Birthday. Guess I can buy it as a gift to me from me .
Think I would have entitled the book. `BOB........Lord of Burnley`

It’s been a pleasure working with Dave on this and We could probably have produced two or three books on Our former chairman. There have been and will always be different views on Lord and we have tried to present a balanced view on one of footballs great characters from his youth in Edwardian times to most recently as he is still talked about in football circles today.

Characters make football for me. One of the reasons I got back into it in the 80s were the funny chants on the terraces including the screaming for goal kicks ( Rocky?!). There's no doubt Lord was a character and helped put Burnley on the map even if he did rub people up the wrong way.

Mike is right. There is enough for two volumes. We hit 158,000 words and the publisher had a nosebleed. To put it in perspective one publisher I worked with always set a definite top limit of 115,000. On top of the 158,000 we had a 10,000 word transcript of his almost poignant final radio interview from 1981. We were asked to cut it, fair enough, you'd have been looking at a price of 25quid for a book that length. So we settled on cuts, without losing any of the stories, plus 32 pages of pics. An average book will have just 16 pic pages. No stories were lost, just told a bit more succinctly. There were still players and people to talk to but we just didn't have the space. Mike is a whizz with archive research and old records, so he took it from Lord's boyhood to becoming chairman in '55. I carried on from there. Mike began digging 8 years ago. I started to build up a file over the last 6 years. Mike has unearthed some wonderful old pics, some not seen for 50 years and some not seen at all.
The cover pic is a gem. Is he smiling, smirking or scowling.

Oh and the foreword by Keith Hackett is a little masterpiece with a couple of lovely stories. Hackett was here several times and when I mentioned to him that Roy Oldfield had once found the referee in his room after a game enjoying a bit of rumpy pumpy with a young lady, he knew straight away who it was, the referee that is. In Roy's book we felt it best not to name him.

If Bob were able to come back, the way the game has gone, we'd be the N Korea of English football!

Was the rumpy - pumpy in a wheelbarrow or on a roller?

We were talking to some Huddersfield fans in the pub and they straightaway mentioned Bob Lord. Closely followed by Steve Kindon.
