bob lord book bannerFormer Burnley chairman Bob Lord passed away in December 1981 but he’ll be back in the news just before we kick off the 2019/20 season although don’t worry, it’s in print and not in person.

Two renowned Burnley FC authors, Dave Thomas and Mike Smith, both members of the Up the Clarets message board, have combined to write a new book entitled Bob Lord of Burnley which is the biography of football’s most controversial chairman.

The self-made butcher ruled Burnley Football Club from 1955 to 1981. A blunt, opinionated chairman, he upset many with his views, but he was one of the first to run a club on business lines, overseeing a production line of top players then sold on to sustain his vision.

From barrow boy to chairman, the self-styled Lord of Burnley built three fine teams during his tenure. He routinely banned reporters while alienating both fans and football’s hierarchy alike. He was scornful of the latter, couldn’t abide the Continentals or football cheats and he constantly rebelled against entrenched, outdated views.

He became a member of the Football League Management Committee and foresaw many aspects of the future of the game, though eventually only his death spared him the humiliation of an FA inquiry into Burnley’s finances.

The book, by Pitch Publishing, will be available from 29th July.
