Oh dear, I knew Peter quite well and was at school at Burnley Grammar School at the same time as his brother Geoff.

Sad news. 66 is no age to pass away. Thanks Peter, for being a claret.

He'd been a very good player with both Leeds and Stoke but he came to Burnley and he wasn't very good at all, nothing like you would have expected from a player who'd played at the top level. But he cared about the club, that I can vouch for, and did his best for us. Smashing lad, I'm so sad with this news.

Sorry. Should have said the following but was distracted by a delivery so rushed my response. My Dad had mentioned he played for Leeds and was a good player for them. Don't remember anything bad being said about him during his time with us. Considering the time with us ended in that 87 season (yes I had to look that up) not having a bad memory of him playing for us says he can't have been as bad as others. I have clear recollections of how bad some were.
As I say. RIP.

Went to Rosehill Junior school I believe

He could really hit a free kick.

I remember one that hit the crossbar and it was visibly vibrating a good few seconds afterwards.

I met him a couple of times when working in his house.

He did. Just spoken to a friend of mine who remembers him and his brother Geoff at Rosehill. I just remember Geoff at Burnley Grammar but got to know Pete well when he signed for us. I’ve let some of his team mates from Burnley know about the sad news.

Had a nasty habit of turning his back on the attacker in a ill advised attempt to make them go where he wanted... but it was so strange as to leave no one knowing which way they were supposed to go, including the attacker. Still he was far from our worst player at that time and was always chatting to the fans even after becoming physio for Carlisle he would stand away from the bench nattering to Burnley fans in the Bob Lord.

Occasionally I have wondered what happened to him, sad news indeed. Hopefully having a pint with Whooshy and remembering happy times. RIP Peter, God bless.

I was a Rosehill friend of the Hamptons and recently became a facebook friend of Pete's. Us good uns played for the school team for two years but Pete excepionally played for 3. He was a speedy left winger then. Middle brother Geoff was a good small striker at BGS (don't think he went to Rosehill as the family came from Chadderton when Geoff was starting secondary school). Eldest brother Steve was simply the most skillfull human I have ever seen - he started as a pro with, I think, Darlington but got physically booted out of the game by morons then went to work in a bank. Pete was always the quickest and it was no surprise when he made it. The family were big City fans in the Joe Mercer/Malcolm Allison era and took me for my first visit to Maine Road in dad's company Vauxhall Cresta - he came to Burnley to manage the Stylo Mill. They lived on Reynolds Street. Great football family. RIP Pete.

Shocking news RIP Peter, and he'll always be remembered by Clarets for his role in the Orient game.

I didn't realise he was a local lad who came back to his roots later in his career.

Pete’s just gone 66 so more than two years younger than me. Geoff was also younger but just a year younger. Didn’t know the older brother at all.

None of his former team mates had heard anything but I’ve got the news out to Hoskin, Malley, Devaney & Leebrook.

That's right Tony. The eldest, Steve, was skinny and bespectacled.and arrived at school wearing, with the permission of Nobby Stokes, his Cannon Slade, Chadderton, blazer/ badge. I remember the big lads taking the **** when he explained he played for their First Eleven. Then he got the ball and danced around the lot of them like Roy Of The Rovers . He became a great colleague of also mega-mega-skilful Ray Walne, who also regarded him as the best ever. However, Pete had the speed that Geoff and Steve didn't have - awesome for a young kid!

Geoff wore specs too and hardly looked sporty but he was also a decent player.

It was Feb 85, I've got a feeling it was pre Ashley being in the team, I would have to find the prog to check. We drew 1-1 with Kevin Hird scoring our goal - he also had a pen saved ! grrrrr

Saw him play and part of the team that really got me hooked strangely even though I’d been a few years before. Anyone who was in the Orient game will always be a valuable part of our history. It’s sad when players you spent your youth watching pass away. It makes you realise how old you are and how it comes to us all eventually RIP

He was that, Tony, a bit like Ian St John/Alec Young - small but dangerous.
Also had a dry, skitfull sense of humour. Pete and Steve were serious but Geoff was anything but.

That was the previous season. We also played them in December that year and that was when Hoskin had his leg broken.

Not the best left back to play for us, but his experience for the Orient game must have been invaluable!

Ray Walne !!
I played football with him when I was a young lad for Grammar School Old Boys. We were a team made up mostly of lads between about 17 and 20 years old but we had 2 or 3 older blokes play for us....to look after us !!
Ray was one of them - very classy player himself but one of the most laid back blokes you could ever meet. We all used to meet at the tennis club on Belvedere road and then set off in cars playing round Lancashire - but for some reason I never got to the bottom of when Ray gave us the pleasure of his attendance we always picked him up from his house on Manchester Road....the only one who got this special treatment.

Anyway I digress - RIP Peter H.

Played his part in one of the most important games ever, in our long history.

Yup. Deakin moved to left back the following season when we brought in Steve Gardner and Peter Zelem with Steve Davis coming in too a little later. But up until then Deakin had always been a centre back.

Didn’t know that, but heard he was tipped to do well as a youngster at Everton but, for whatever reason, it didn’t work out. Always liked whooshie. Thought he was a good club captain who did well for us in a difficult period. Always worried me though when he feigned to put it down the line and cut inside.

We seem to have lost so many Clarets these last few years.

My thoughts are with his family and close friends including those of us on UTC.

Deakin played as central defender. Back four was Leebrook, Gallagher, Deakin, Hampton.

When the In Memoriam was held in January someone on here posted that there wasn’t a single ex-Claret to have passed away in 2019.

That’s not the case in 2020. We’ve already had Fred Smith, Peter Whittingham, Brian Pilkington and now Peter Hampton.

I was rather excited when we signed Peter, having memories of him being a good player at Leeds. RIP Peter.
