Re: ARTICLE: We’ve moved Into the 1960s
Another fabulous five year period in our history. Look forward to taking in all the information later this evening.
First thing to notice though on the intro is the season of the squad photo of 1962/63 featuring Billy Marshall top left. I think the photo must be 1960/61 as we changed to round-necks in Nov.'61 and sold Marshall to Oldham soon after.

Tony, in the fixtures and results section the last season I'm seeing is 1959/60.

All sorted - just some opposition goalscorers missing from 1961/62 from three clubsRoyboyclaret wrote:Tony, in the fixtures and results section the last season I'm seeing is 1959/60.

Re: ARTICLE: We’ve moved Into the 1960s
Lost count of the number of goals Jimmy Greaves scored against us......did he ever fail to score?!
Although we won the title in '59/'60 for me that great side didn't peak until the early part of the '61/'62 season. In Sept.'61 we played 7 won 7 and scored 27 goals, 20 of those away from the Turf in 4 away games. We were literally blowing away every team that came before us and it was a joy to watch. Harry Potts always said go out and play with a smile on your boots, and we certainly did that. Undoubtedly my favourite ever time watching the Clarets.

Greaves had a hell of a record against us but I think he did just about against every other team.Royboyclaret wrote:Lost count of the number of goals Jimmy Greaves scored against us......did he ever fail to score?!

All those names on the scorers lists now are players I remember playing against us and then I see Stephenson (again), Pilkington and Fenton on that list.
It is widely believed that we peaked on the night of the Leicester game in 1961/62 when we won 6-2. Jimmy Mac said that was just about the best ever performance.

Re: ARTICLE: We’ve moved Into the 1960s
They were certainly the golden years but to end 61/2 with nothing was a bitter pill. Could and maybe should have done the double but ended up with nowt. We scored 101 goals but conceded 67. How times have changed.Royboyclaret wrote:Lost count of the number of goals Jimmy Greaves scored against us......did he ever fail to score?!

61/2 of course was the season of the Swan/Kay match fixing scandal. Who knows how that might have changed things. If my memory serves me right Ipswich v Wednesday was one of the games involved.
Couldnt argue with the Cup Final result but getting to Wembley probably cost us the title. Still league and cup runners up is something we are unlikely to ever see again. But I said that about getting into the PL and playing in Europe again. So what do i know.

Re: ARTICLE: We’ve moved Into the 1960s
And for good measure, just four days earlier, we also won 6-2 away at Birmingham. From memory in both those games we were 6-0 in front shortly after the hour mark and then declared. Hard to believe, I know, but we were unplayable at that time, with a team that was perfectly balanced from back to front.ClaretTony wrote:Greaves had a hell of a record against us but I think he did just about against every other team.

Re: ARTICLE: We’ve moved Into the 1960s
In 61/62 it says we won 4-2 at Spurs, but it names four goalscorers for them, so maybe it should say we lost 4-2 instead.

My proof reading skill has been confirmed.
Re: ARTICLE: We’ve moved Into the 1960s
We also won our next away game 5-3 at Fulham. The 3 games were in a 14 day spell and we also beat Everton at home during the same spell. Of the 17 away goals we scored Ray Pointer had 5 (plus 2 at home v Everton), John Connelly 5 ,Bomber Harris and Jimmy Mac 2 each and Jimmy Robson 3.Royboyclaret wrote:And for good measure, just four days earlier, we also won 6-2 away at Birmingham. Thanks. There will be errors. I’ll get this one corrected.Pstotto wrote:In 61/62 it says we won 4-2 at Spurs, but it names four goalscorers for them, so maybe it should say we lost 4-2 instead.
Re: ARTICLE: We’ve moved Into the 1960s
If I have a look at the others and I spot anything, I'll tell you. Anyway, it's a good if tragic read of the list of how Burnley missed the prizes in 62, so worth the effort.

I’ve corrected the Spurs result now.

Was that away win at Fulham our last one for a few decades? (until the away win in the midweek game in the recent promotion season)FCBurnley wrote:We also won our next away game 5-3 at Fulham. I assume you mean at Fulham > If so it was not. We won 1-0 there in 64-5 Irvine the scorer. And we won 5-2 in 65-6. Irvine hat trick Oneill and Miller pen. Wonder why they didnt let Willie take itJohnDearyMe wrote:Was that away win at Fulham our last one for a few decades? (until the away win in the midweek game in the recent promotion season)

Re: ARTICLE: We’ve moved Into the 1960s
Superb piece of film, first time seeing that for me. It was actually a 5th Round FA Cup match at the Turf with a gate of 30,977. Notice no weakened side back then in the FA Cup and it was in the middle of the two legs of the European Cup tie against Hamburg.giveusaB wrote:Burnley v Swansea 1961

We reached the Cup semi-final that season before losing to Tottenham, but that game against Swansea had Jimmy Mac showing off his finest skills.

Re: ARTICLE: We’ve moved Into the 1960s
Also think it was Brian Pilkington's last game for us before Bob Lord packed him off to Bolton. Pilky had a brilliant game in the first leg of the European Cup match against Hamburg on the Turf scoring twice and was gutted to be told he was leaving by Lord. Gordon Harris played in the second leg in Germany.......and scored.

And Bob Lord, as ever, had his own reason for getting Pilkington out.Royboyclaret wrote:Also think it was Brian Pilkington's last game for us before Bob Lord packed him off to Bolton. More magic from Jimmy Mac for the third goal and a brilliant second goal from Brian Pilkington.giveusaB wrote:Edited highlights of Hamburg home.Great skills on a challenging pitch.

Hard to believe Bob Lord had sold Pilky within a couple of weeks after that game.
Re: ARTICLE: We’ve moved Into the 1960s
What a different game it was then. 3-0 up in first leg with 15 mins or so left. So just sit back and defend then pick em off on the break. Er no. Not how it worked in those days. Brilliant goal by Pilkie even by todays standards. Wonder what the truth was about him going to Bolton. Oh and I will never forget those bloody square goalposts in Hamburg. Wonderful daysRoyboyclaret wrote:More magic from Jimmy Mac for the third goal and a brilliant second goal from Brian Pilkington.

I certainly don't know the truth behind his departure, but ClaretTony is hinting he might know.FCBurnley wrote:What a different game it was then. 3-0 up in first leg with 15 mins or so left. Those square posts in Hamburg still give me nightmares. With standard round posts Mac's late shot would have rebounded into the net instead of coming back into play and we would have gone through.
