For close followers of our younger players
Assuming Burnley’s transfer business post COVID will need to be cut back to nothing and we don’t do deals to extend Hendrick Hart Bardsley or Lennon. Have we got the younger places to pad out the squad in the positions we’ll be light? Notably right back, right midfield and centre midfield.

One thing is pretty certain (to me at least). Gibson will leave at a massive loss on the 15million we shelled out for him unless he goes back to Boro on a free with us released from the pending transfer fee owed to Boro

Agree, I think, just not sure how he goes. The scenario you mention re Boro may seem most likely. I guess that spot becomes Dunne’s
Who’s our back up right back, right mid and centre mid though?
Nothing like seeing young players come through so the positive is there may be some enforced opportunities in the squad for them to seize.

Re: For close followers of our younger players
The two lads who went to Grimsby on loan seem the closest, both have been on the bench for the first team too (Josh Benson and Anthony Glennon).
Lewis Richardson, the young striker, was on the bench for the first team this season too. If we are really as light as could be possible and with a totally understandable reticence to spend any money, you would imagine those three would possibly get games or at least bench places at a push.

Isn't Richardson just turned 17?

Adam Phillips has impressed me with the U23s.Hes currently on loan at Morecambe.I was surprised though to see that he is already 22 so maybe his chance with us at first team level is slim.He has quite a list of clubs behind him for his age as well

I did have him in mind for the gap I would suggest we have in centre midfield if Hendrick goes as is suggested. Big jump from a loan at the basement of league 2 though? Same with Cooney is it at right back?randomclaret2 wrote: ↑Mon May 04, 2020 10:08 amAdam Phillips has impressed me with the U23s.Hes currently on loan at Morecambe.I was surprised though to see that he is already 22 so maybe his chance with us at first team level is slim.He has quite a list of clubs behind him for his age as well

Re: For close followers of our younger players
I remember at the end of Dyche's first half season he was annoyed with our crowd for being very unforgiving when he brought on the youth player Steven Hewitt.
I'm just thinking aloud that IF the season resumes and it is behind closed doors, it might offer a good opportunity to blood a few youngsters without them having the aspect of the crowd to think about?

It was the Watford home game in the promotion season - came on for Stanislas with ten minutes to play and dared to misplace a pass. Both Dummigan and Howieson were also on the bench that night.Rowls wrote: ↑Mon May 04, 2020 3:29 pmI remember at the end of Dyche's first half season he was annoyed with our crowd for being very unforgiving when he brought on the youth player Steven Hewitt.

Re: For close followers of our younger players
I thought that Alex Elder made some very interesting points in his recent interview. He explained that in his day the reserve team was exactly that and that if there was an injury a ready replacement was waiting in the wings who knew all the positioning routines etc as the two teams would train and work together.
As we know these days that is not the case and the gap between the first team and the under 23s is massive. Senior players are only involved to regain fitness after injury. The mass loans I imagine are also disruptive and whilst it is beneficial for the most part for the lads to experience senior first team football the level is miles below Premier League level. Indeed after promotion it was I thought it was evident that even the difference between the Championship & EPL seemed almost like two different sports.
I saw Philips earlier in the season and thought he looked quietly effective, and plainly he has done well at Level 4 however I wonder if playing a few games for Morecambe is actually preparing him effectively for EPL level football.
For me the loan system is a real dichotomy and doesn’t seem to be a direct replacement for reserve team football.

On the few occasions I have seen him play the young full back Cooney, currently on loan at Morecambe, has always impressed me. As previously mentioned the step up to Premier League is huge but he is certainly out of the Trippier mould.

Spring is a time for pruning BFC is no exception
Time to shift our out of contact big earners
Hart.Lennon.Brady and Hendrick all need releasing to allow our rising stars to come in
Bardsley should be offered a new 2 yr deal as hes shown enough to justify this

It will be extremely difficult to replace Hendrick particularly in current circumstances. He is probably our best "utility" player, and if we have to prune our squad and have no or limited budget for new signings then it will be important to have players who are versatile.Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Tue May 05, 2020 7:14 amTime to shift our out of contact big earners

(I do think he'll most likely move on for a better contract however).
Promising younger claret players
Anyone prepared to predict which of the following players will make the first team in coming years?
Joel Senior
Lewis Richardson
Jimmy Dunne
Peacock Farrell
Ali Koiki
Mace Goodridge
George McMahon

Re: Promising younger claret players
Jimmy Dunne is hardly a youngster in that group being 23 in October and I don't think he has played above the third tier in the League has he?
I think he may become our 4th central defender however, given our finances now, assuming we can keep Tarks and Ben Mee leaving Long and Dunne as 3rd and 4th choice

Re: For close followers of our younger players
If Joe Hart goes in the next window, then BPF will surely move up to our number 2 keeper,so he'll likely play in the odd cup game.
Koiki ditto i can see him getting a run-out in cup ties.
Dunne will probably go out on loan again, unless we sell Tarks, then he'll be 3rd choice if we don't bring anybody in.
The rest will still need development in the u23's,before they can be considered for the 1st team, and a couple of them Goodridge and Richardson have been out with serious injuries,so they'll need time to get up to fitness again.
If even 1 or 2 come through the academy in the next few seasons, that'll be vital to ensuring we can continue to compete at this level.
The emergence of McNeil has shown them that it is possible to break into the 1st team.

I’m always amused at some of the posts on here promoting some of our younger players for a first time place despite never having seen them play.

I get the impression that the level of optimism about our U23s being Premier League ready is in inverse proportion to the amount of time spent actually watching them

For me just Lewis and Peacock-Farrell but hope that I'm wrong and that more of them make it.

Re: For close followers of our younger players
I've never seen the youth players either. But looking at their stats, dates of birth and playing champ manager gives you a good feel for how they're going to progress.
Some people might smirk or pour hot scolding ice over such notions but there's something in it. I'm right nearly as often as I'm wrong so nobody can tell me what I can or "should" post about young footballers.
For the record I think we'll see the following players in our first team squad in the next season:
Pete McGruff
Armand Staffwitch
Rogan Josh
Li' Tae-Kwon-Do'h
The following players aren't good enough and need to be let go immediately:
Buster Butterball
Happy Gofundme
Cedric Vibes
Marceau Toronto-Taureau

Re: For close followers of our younger players
Interesting stuff.
In my honest opinion: if they are not making it into the first team squad by 20 they never will. I don't know the players, but that's pretty much how it goes.
The Alex Elder thing was interesting. Of course the reserves in his day were what we now call squad members who spend so much of the season doing nothing (a reality of the modern game) apart from either becoming fairly dissatisfied or, according to some, "happy to steal a wage".

Re: Promising younger claret players
Difficult to make comparisons but he certainly knows where the goal is. Scores with both feet. Not very tall and quite slim but he's only 17 so he has plenty of time to fill out a bit. Scored 5 goals on his debut for the U18's, has scored a hatrick for the U23's and has been capped with England's 16s.OssyClaret wrote: ↑Tue May 05, 2020 8:33 pmWhat type of player is Richardson? Re: For close followers of our younger players
The squad players who we really could quite easily call the Reserve team in the old fashioned way play private matches gainst all kinds of opponents almost every week. Some are publicised many are not.. The idea that they spend much of the season 'doing nothing' is a myth.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Tue May 05, 2020 10:04 pmInteresting stuff.

The U23 team is in reality a third XI .
There is a progression...the ones more likely to make it play more often in the squad games with the better U18s then pllaying more often in the U23s etc although this tends to be skewed a little by the practice of weakening the U23s by loaning out the majority of the side at a certain point to play in the lower leagues
When we were in Division 4 how many loan players had glittering topflight careers afterwards ? Not many .... the step up is enormous
