Good luck to all those released in finding new clubs, and in their careers post Burnley.

Re: ARTICLE: Clarets confirm academy retained list
It's tough to make it, even tougher now we're in the premier league.
It's before my time and I know he would have made it eventually but would Trevor Steven be playing for us so young if we weren't in the 3rd tier?
And with Lee Dixon? Maybe he would have been a Burnley player longer if it wasn't for Brian Laws?

Re: ARTICLE: Clarets confirm academy retained list
Aiden O'Neill is the strange one for me. Offered a new contract when he's been playing in Australia for the last 2 years. I thought he moved back over there as he was homesick? Maybe he's ready to give it another go over here. He did look a promising player at the time and we are short in midfield.
Interesting too that Ali Koiki, Adam Phillips and Rob Harker have only been offered and not accepted their deals, though I suppose it's a sign of improvement in the department that these players presumably have interest from elsewhere to delay signing a deal with us.

That's why Koiki has been unavailable for the squad - the other two had been out on loan in any case.FeedTheArf wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2020 4:23 pm

Re: ARTICLE: Clarets confirm academy retained list
Fair play to him if he can get a better move given he's only got 15 appearances to his name from a loan at Swindon and did OK but didn't set the world alight. If he gets his head down and performs next season then you would expect us to release Pieters this time next year and he'd have a clear pathway to the first team squad.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2020 4:54 pmThat's why Koiki has been unavailable for the squad - the other two had been out on loan in any case.

If they haven’t signed very strange the contracts might be worse than last years contracts

Find the Aiden O’Neil contract offer absolutely bizarre.

Shame players like Koiki haven't signed a contract. Could have been a great opportunity for him to get some Premier League experience in the last few games (albeit in slightly surreal circumstances)

There's a few who seem to have disappeared completely?
Glennon, Cropper, Steels... and what's happened to Mumbongo?

Anthony Glennon and Jordan Cropper are under contract - but neither available for games because they have been out on loan.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2020 10:34 pmThere's a few who seem to have disappeared completely?

Vinnie Steels appears to have disappeared some time ago along with Teddy Perkins (now Watford).
Joel Mumbongo has struggled with injuries this season.
Of your four, Steels is the only one who has disappeared.

We also had a goalkeeper, McMahon? who I believe we signed from a EFL club, is he also still under contract?
I'm aklways interested in how these young players are shaping up. There's a story behind this, but I won't bore you with it.

Also can’t believe he’s just 21. Assumed he must’ve been about that when he played at Chelsea. Looked a really good prospect.

Re: ARTICLE: Clarets confirm academy retained list
I had to check this week to see whether Max Thompson was the youngest to play for us in the Premier League but he's not, he's behind Aiden O'Neill. Both were 18 but Aiden was only a month or so past while Thompson is four months past.cricketfieldclarets wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2020 11:06 pmWord for word what I was going to post.

I've got McMahon listed as contract ending this summer with the club having a one year option but nothing has been said on him. I'll try to find out.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2020 11:04 pmThanks, I just wondered why they weren't on the list.

Well done Mitch George. I grew up with his dad in the 80s and 90s. Typical armchair Liverpool fan until the Walker cash came in then was one of the wannabe Blackburn "hard" lads. Funny his kid ended up at Burnley. Dad's name? Georgey of course.

I was particularly interested in the goalkeeping situation following quotes from our new GK coach.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2020 11:10 pmI've got McMahon listed as contract ending this summer with the club having a one year option but nothing has been said on him. I'll try to find out.
Re: ARTICLE: Clarets confirm academy retained list
Sure I saw an interview with O'Neill at the end of last year saying he was hoping he'd get another contract at Burnley as he wanted to show them how much he'd learned in the Aussie league. SD also commented that it was aimed at toughening him up by playing against hardened professionals when he first went. Assume there was personal reasons/ bit of homesickness there too or otherwise he's have gone on loan over here.FeedTheArf wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2020 4:23 pmAiden O'Neill is the strange one for me. Re: ARTICLE: Clarets confirm academy retained list
With respect to O'Neill, he doesn't appear to have set the Aussie League alight. Looked a good prospect. Hard to say but surely can't be near PL standard? Hope I'm wrong and he turns into a top player

Richardson is already under contract until 2022 so wouldn't have figured in yesterday's announcement. But he hasn't played for some time now because of injury.Bordeauxclaret wrote: ↑Fri Jun 26, 2020 6:43 amPresuming Richardson is still injured at the moment?

Re: ARTICLE: Clarets confirm academy retained list
Its not going to cost a fortune to give O'Neill another contract, he wont be on more than 4 figures per week i'd imagine, so why not hang fire before cutting off our past investment.
If he isn't up to PL level, this gives us a fee for a move to Championship or L1.

Re: ARTICLE: Clarets confirm academy retained list
We might be making money on O'Neil in loan fees?
Re: ARTICLE: Clarets confirm academy retained list
If O’Neill rejects the contract and signs for another English club, won’t we be due compensation? If we hadn’t offered him a deal, no compensation would apply.
No idea but could be part of the reason? I rated him whenever I saw him but hard to see him nailing down a regular spot with us at this time.

Re: ARTICLE: Clarets confirm academy retained list
O'Neill was a very good young player and not overawed, when plunged into the thick of things.
Fingers crossed he signs and returns.

Any updates on these young 'uns offered new contracts or extensions apart from Koiki wanting to leave?

In Saturday's Mail, and on the opposite page to the Nick Pope interview, is a story that Mike Garlick is reportedly playing "hardball" in contract negotiations with the Academy players and reports that promising strker Max Thompson and his representatives are haggling with the club over a few hundred pounds a week.

This is one of the problems. We have a CEO, a COO & a technical director and the chairman is getting involved in the contracts.kentonclaret wrote: ↑Sat Jul 11, 2020 1:12 pmIn Saturday's Mail, and on the opposite page to the Nick Pope interview, is a story that Mike Garlick is reportedly playing "hardball" in contract negotiations with the Academy players and reports that promising strker Max Thompson and his representatives are haggling with the club over a few hundred pounds a week.

If a Premier League club are haggling over a few hundred pounds a week on a players wages, something is seriously wrong.

I thought it was common knowledge we penny pinch, and every pound was vital.

You think any company in the world does not haggle over every penny/cent/peso etc. that they pay their trainees or apprentices?randomclaret2 wrote: ↑Sat Jul 11, 2020 1:34 pmIf a Premier League club are haggling over a few hundred pounds a week on a players wages, something is seriously wrong.
Mike Garlick will not be sitting down personally negotiating with these kids and their agents. He, along with the board, will have set the budget and, possibly, the pay constraints the academy managers are allowed to operate within.

Some of these kids should stop listening to their agents, knuckle down and see where that takes them. They don't know they're made.
Re: ARTICLE: Clarets confirm academy retained list
That's what I thought, presume he or his agent are trying to renegotiate his contract on the basis that he's now made his Premier League debut if this story is true?ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Jul 11, 2020 9:58 pmJust to point out that Thompson is under contract until the end of NEXT season.
Correct me if my memory is failing me but didn't Pope & McNeil play a good few months of regular 1st team football on comparitively low wages before being offered a PL-level wage. Perhaps a lesson to be learned for Thompson here?

Get the impression there's a real agenda here. I'm not saying our Chairman is right because I don't know any details but i just feel that if the traffic lights suddenly stopped working throughout Burnley tomorrow it would be Mike Garlick's fault.
