Haha feel free, he’s a player I’ve wanted us to sign for nearly three years, I’m probably more jealous than anything .

Such a situation might also explain why Hladky was prepared to trade a starting spot at Ipswich to instead sit on our bench

I would hope we didn’t need any kicking and already have some ambitious plans lined up. Although a lack of firm links at the moment…Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 08, 2025 8:40 pmI remember watching him at Lorient a couple of years ago (when I wanted us to sign him in the summer we got promoted).
He’s a top player that’s had a bad move. I’m just amazed he’s willing to drop to the championship (IMO he’s actually exactly what we need).
Big statement from Sunderland. Got to imagine this might kick the likes of us and the other two into similar moves
Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
Lewis O'Brien is back from LA and available on loan from Forest. Was excellent for Huddersfield in the season they got to the playoff final. Wrong move to Forest and then the cock up of his failed move to Rovers. Would like us to be interested.

To be honest, I still don’t understand the Hladky situation as I’d have thought he’d fancy a shot at the premier league.AfloatinClaret wrote: ↑Wed Jan 08, 2025 8:52 pmSuch a situation might also explain why Hladky was prepared to trade a starting spot at Ipswich to instead sit on our bench

Best player in the league by some distance.
At the moment that is Maxime Esteve. His role in the best ever defence (so far) attests to that.
This new lad may yet be a world beater, but then again he may not.

Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
Last defender to get championship player of the year was Jagielka in 2006
Not exactly a ridiculous statement. Really uncommon for a defender to be the best player in the league.
As good as Esteve has been difficult to say he’s best player in the league when I’m not sure he’s our best player.
Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
Not one that would pay as well though, I'd imagine unless Sheffield United were interested and they were focused on Cooper.AfloatinClaret wrote: ↑Wed Jan 08, 2025 10:10 pmBut I suspect - especially being available for free - that Hladky could have found himself a starting place in the Championship rather than sitting on Burnley's bench
Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
So a defender can be the best player - you’ve contradicted what you said. Yes, it’s rarer, but there’s no reason that a defender (or goalkeeper for that matter) can’t be voted the best player in a league.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 08, 2025 10:14 pmLast defender to get championship player of the year was Jagielka in 2006

I didn’t say it can’t happen. I said in my opinion I don’t think a defender can be.
Still don’t think a defender can be best player in the league. Got to be an attacker as they win you the games. Can have 46 0-0 draws and potentially get relegated

It’s a bit odd quoting a statement of a defender winning player of the season and then saying you don’t think a defender can be best player in the league.
Our previous manager won it in the Premier League, as did Schmeichel, Vidić (x2) van Dijk to name a few non strikers.

Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
Didn’t mean to ruin the “transfers” thread by suggesting one of our players is the best in the league
That’ll teach me for backing my own team.
But what it does show is that given the debate, this Sunderland guy is no different to many other signings, including some of ours. He may improve them, but it is unlikely to be decisively.

We get Barnes
What's the difference ?
Trust in our recruitment team
Still over three weeks to go

Never heard of Enzo Le Fee but according to wiki he hasn't scored a goal since 22/23 season and now been bombed by Roma who are 10th in Serie A.
I presume he isn't an attacking midfielder but just read he is the best player in this league so what kind of player is he

His best seasons have come when playing as an attacking midfielder, at Lorient in Ligue 1 he got 10 goal contributions (more importantly was right up there for big chances created and chances created).claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 8:14 amNever heard of Enzo Le Fee but according to wiki he hasn't scored a goal since 22/23 season and now been bombed by Roma who are 10th in Serie A.

Since then he has moved into a DM type role and hasn’t had the same output.
I imagine he’s gone to Sunderland to play attacking midfield again

Blackburn seemingly struggling in their swoop to loan Stoke's bench warming defender Kitching, unwanted by Lampard or most Stoke fans.

Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
There's a lot of truth in that.
Over the course of a season an exceptional defender, most especially a goalkeeper, is likely to prevent you from conceding more 'likely' goals than the amount of extra goals an outstanding striker will score for you.

Why is it a waste of a wage, if you could get an experienced player for 6 months to be back up to the 4 CMs we have at the moment it’s not a waste.
We have Cullen Laurent brownhill and then Hannibal, if we get injuries we are then short in the position

Shelvey could also play in the 10 role, although I've always found him at his best running from deep through the middle of midfield and speeding the attack up - potentially meaning less passing back/sideways.

Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
We have our starting midfield 3 pretty much nailed on now and then in low block teams it’s Cullen with brownhill higher and then a number 10, having Shelvey on a cheap deal till the end of the season with an option if he performs well wouldn’t be a bad deal
Re: January Transfer Window Rumours
Because we have four senior central midfielders already. Rather use one of the U21s as depth there than waste a wage on snail paced Shelvey to probably play about about 180 minutes all season and block progression routes for younger players. Bauress, Veevers, McDermott or Hugill are all perfectly capable of being emergency backup and picking up 5 minutes here or there.123EasyasBFC wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 11:58 amWhy is it a waste of a wage, if you could get an experienced player for 6 months to be back up to the 4 CMs we have at the moment it’s not a waste.

Better still look to bring in a long term replacement for Bronwhill who we can phase in over the next month before he walks away on a free.
