The club behind the bus station was Savanaahs/ Chalkers, I think it was the old Lucas or some firms social club prior to this, used to have xnooker tables in one half before becoming a total club, some great lads night out in there after a couple of quick Australian white and cider in Yate`s

You are right, I was, but the question was between the other two establishments.Clarets4me wrote: ↑Thu Sep 30, 2021 1:57 pmI'd have thought you'd be an " Annabella's " man ..... for the sophisticated crowd !![]()
I tended to alternate between Angels and Annabella's/Cats
Upstairs first, then downstairs if you failed on the pull, then off home if you failed again. (never happened to me of course).
Actually met Mrs Captain at Panama Joe's (if that was the one downstairs on Hammerton St).

It's a bit before my time but what sort of club was Angels before the rave scene took off in the 90s?

A few of us got turned away from our local dive (not one in Burnley) and the doormen were adamant that this wasn't because we had crash helmets, so we returned the following week all smiling nicely and wearing dinner suits and bow ties but once again carrying the skid-lids; we got in, OK but we didn't 'win' as when we came to leave it was to discover that the helmets - which they insisted we checked - were full of beer, fag ends and assorted other crap that'd 'accidentally' fallen into them in the cloakroom

I refitted a few nightclubs over the years - always on stage payments, paid in advance - and in the 'cold light of day' with few exception, they are absolute **** holes!longsidetrumpet wrote: ↑Wed Sep 29, 2021 11:08 am... Mecca in Burnley which had the same look as all the other Meccas.
Circ had that open plan layout and was quite plush...
As soon as Angels opened that was the place, taking club design to a new level...

Same route for me! Followed by either a hot dog from one of those blokes with a hot dog/burger “trolley” or if a big treat a curry and more beer at The Khoi Noor……….!Vintage Claret wrote: ↑Wed Sep 29, 2021 7:32 pmLate 70's/early 80's - Smackwater Jack's then Angels or Annabella's - happy days!

Hit man and her down the Cats
Re: Burnley night-clubs in the 1970’s - Angels or The Circulation?
Mid to late 80's definitely Angels the odd night in cats, when rave music came in we moved to Zanzibar which I always remember would of been a death trap if a fire broke out and on some Sunday's would go over to blueberry's (?) In Nelson as they opened till 12:30 when everywhere else stopped serving at 10:30, bit of a dump but nobody cared at that time

Circ every time for me a very regular haunt, never went to the angels. Every now and again marthorme grange could get quite lively at weekends when you got a few horse botherers in. Great times.

Remember Annabellas and Cats in early to mid 80's. Always good nights. Preferred upstairs Annabellas for some reason. Just seemed a bit "classier" for won't of a better description. Only went to Angels once and wasn't impressed tbh.

Wedensday funk night at the angels , something like late 70s early 80s . Drink and dance all night until 2am , walk home and in bed just after 3am and up for work at 7am .
I think I need a nap just thinking of that craic .

They had mirrors over the urinals at the Circ, useful for watching out for potential assailants!

Is the former Sidewalk 53 building still empty? When was it last in use?

Must be going back 20 years?? Used to be a lively place back in the day always heaving for England matches when Phil Caine had it. The pub gets a mention by an author who was at the Plymouth game after visiting every league ground in the Waddle season.
On a side note noticed Zanzibar is being reopened another one that must have been shut for a fair while!

Re: Burnley night-clubs in the 1970’s - Angels or The Circulation?
Have you got evidence of that ? lol
El trop on a Sunday or Monday was as you say in a class of it s own.
There was a Pub in nelson near the station that had a night club of some sort down stairs I seem to remember .
In the late 70s early 80s had great nights out at the Hop, Smacks and Sparrow hawk then on to a night club ,Angels or cats and the upstairs forgot its name,
Also used to sometimes go to Martholme grange / also the one above Rishton that became the spice lounge.
Sometimes went to Todmorden where there was a club in the wild hills

Saturday night at The Hop, Swiss corner and Angels. Sometimes went further afield to the Lodestar at Ribchester and visited Sourhall on the moors over Tod, great memories...

Anyone recall Cyril Kenyon, who had the Circulation in the late 1970s? Also had the Willow Tree in Colne and (just Googled him) the Top Hat in Blackburn. Died last year, aged 88.
