Hadn't read you post before posting mine!Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Sun Nov 10, 2024 10:03 pmThe issue we have throughout the team (not just midfield) isnt defence splitting passes but that in general we dont pass it enough with pace and purpose meaning players have to wait for the ball or break their run. This is what slows our play down and makes us easy to defend against.
Basically we need to transition from the back to the front much quicker but with a string of several passes rather than going longer. What the answer is im not sure but from small glimpses I think Hannibal in a central position rather than being pushed further forward will help this and the reason we look a little better with Laurent on is because there is more urgency in his passing and general play.
Brownhill has been our best and more consistent midfielder this season but I think we might actually play better as a team without him but I think we are a long way from that and from thinking about dropping our captain

Re: Brownhill
He did do that, I felt I saw a pass but maybe there wasn’t.dougcollins wrote: ↑Sun Nov 10, 2024 7:04 pmHe played a ball back towards goal as we approached 90 mins and copped a fair amount of stick from the JHL.
He had nowhere to go to be fair.
But for me the problem is that when Sarmiento gets the ball he faces forward and with quick movement and fast feet tries to get past a man or thread a pass. When Brownhill gets the ball he looks up, if there is no obvious pass on the ball goes back.
It is a quality problem.
Now, Josh isn’t that player. But he needs players around him that are. We don’t have enough of them, well, ones not with the physio.
Re: Brownhill
I like Brownhill. His decision to give the ball to Jay after we got the pen was exceptional.

Re: Brownhill
And yet in the first half we had 11 shots on goal.
Parker deliberately played Cullen further forwards and he was central to our attack (until his booking put paid to that).
Naturally Laurent and Hannibal looked good when they came on - one or both of them should be starting but can’t as we don’t have a centre forward for them to support

Re: Brownhill
I agree with most of the points made because the problem is we have a mish mash of a squad that could produce two decent Championship teams but not one top of the table championship team because we have a striker issue and arguably a manager that is expecting players to play in a way they can't....!
The key is Plan A, we get Foster back and he plays well with Flemming and we have a plausible Plan B because Plan A looks doubtful.
If we can't make the above two work then we won't make the top two because we won't score enough.
It's as simple as that...!

Re: Brownhill
Tempo is definitely an issue. We are doing some good things but in no way quickly enough to cause sufficient problems, as often as we should.
Not intending to weigh in on Trafford, and appreciating that at times we are looking to draw the opposition on to us, there are times that he’s far too slow to get the ball moving again.
These delays suck away any momentum that we have been building and allow the opposition a full reset.
I’m still a bit puzzled with Hannibal and how we are utilising him. He has to be dropped further back, where I think we’d see much more from him.
I’d be interested to see Hannibal alongside Laurent for a game or two.

Josh is a top bloke, and loves the club……….but he’s a paid professional and maybe just needs a quick check ………he’s just as frustrated as we are but maybe like us in our jobs…………….go home.
Can’t be much fun getting pumped last season, the challenges of this one……and your own giving you grief.
But as an experienced chap………don’t rise to the bait.

exactly, utter nonsense.
one of the repeated negative posters even went home for a chicken dinner.
either he's whipped, or they are too mentally deficient to plan their dinner for after the match finishes. strange times.

I honestly think Brownhill is better since becoming captain.

Re: Brownhill
Nrownhill had a good game yesterday. He broke up their attacks several times with interceptions and tackles. He also geed up others, inc Trafford and kept the ball for the pen, in his words, to take any gamesmanship from them. Then Jay steps forward and he hands it straight to him. Excellent thought and action.
We knew Jay is the pen taker. I was expecting Jay to take it. Swans obviously not.
One pass right before the goal, got a groan. He could have tried a pass, however, the player to whom he passed, was facing the right way and had a clearer picture. All good.
Captain Brownhill is essential to this team.

I often wonder if the people who criticise players like Brownhill have ever played the game before
Work off the ball matters
Filling space matters
Being a nuisance matters

Re: Brownhill
Thought the groan when he did that pass was just general frustration tbh. Felt a bit sorry for him in that moment.
His shielding of Jay for the pen was exceptional. The ref was so weak in that situation and should've booked a couple of their players.

I think that was Burnley1989 and I wouldn't consider him a negative poster. He just a left a bit early because he was hungry

It's something I have done occasionally over the years either to make a train connection or beat the traffic. I am glad that I stayed until the end yesterday

Re: Brownhill
I often think this when watching the game. It starts at Trafford who I have been very happy with btw. He has done nothing wrong and I have always thought that he is a better all around keeper than Muric. The one area Muric was far stronger is distribution as he moved it much quicker. A lot of the passes made by our players are often to feet or sometimes just behind them rather than being played slightly in front of them. As you rightly say the build up can be a little slow at times. It's easy to be critical from the stands when you can see a man in space and the ball needs to be released quickly but the player holding the ball either fails to see the said player or doesn't have the confidence to execute the pass.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Sun Nov 10, 2024 10:03 pmThe issue we have throughout the team (not just midfield) isnt defence splitting passes but that in general we dont pass it enough with pace and purpose meaning players have to wait for the ball or break their run. At the moment I don't think that we have the players with the tactical nous to move it quickly, especially around the opposition box. I am hopeful that the absent 3 players in Ramsey, Redmond and Tresor may offer the solution. These 3 are probably the most capable of playing fast interlinking 1 touch football around the box and it may be a forlorn hope but I hope that at least a couple of them return to the match day squad sometime soon. As you say Laurent and Hannibal add urgency but they are not the players to produce that defence splitting pass.

Re: Brownhill
Hmm.....cant help thinking you ar being tad optimistic there. Tresor has shown us pretty much the square root of nothing so far and possibly doesn't want to even play for us, Redmond WAS good at this but has to be open to doubt now given his age and the injury he's had. That leaves Ramsey where the jury is still very much out but where his time at Middlesbrough indicates that you could be right...hope so !

They mentioned he did on Radio Lancs at the end of the game when they were discussing the penalty incident, which is why I asked the question on here.
Listen to it back on BBC sounds if needs be.

Re: Brownhill
If we up the tempo, then the gaps in their defence should be bigger meaning the pass does not need to be as accurate to be effective. I think linking Browny with Hannibal and having two up top helps us in this division when we are being expected to set the tempo and be the aggressor.Anonymous Claret wrote: ↑Mon Nov 11, 2024 9:46 amAt the moment I don't think that we have the players with the tactical nous to move it quickly, especially around the opposition box. Re: Brownhill
The ref did lose a bit of control there and it was a sensible move from Brownhill but I was entertained by Iwelumo on Sky suggesting that Brownhill may take the penalty as our regular penalty taker and lauding his previous consistent penalties.

Makes a change ... usually we are back in the outskirts of LP before BFC gets a mention on Radio Bla.. (I mean) Lancashire
