Prigozhin says it's over:
"They were going to dismantle PMC Wagner. We came out on 23 June to the March of Justice. In a day, we walked to nearly 200km away from Moscow. In this time, we did not spill a single drop of blood of our fighters. Now, the moment has come when blood may spill. That’s why, understanding the responsibility for spilling Russian blood on one of the sides, we are turning back our convoys and going back to field camps according to the plan."

I'd be surprised if Putin has fled. Where would he go that's safer than Moscow? I dont think he's that popular in St Petersburg.
Also- he needs to stay in Moscow to rally the defences, if he goes, theyll more likely cave in.
Maybe the various VIP plane departures are "nearest and dearest" - just in case things go badly.

Yeah, read it several places on Telegram as well. Be interesting to see what Putin has agreed to. And btw, Prigozhin can now never feel safe again if he stops now imo.

SKY reporting Belarusian leader has negotiated a deal with Wagner and they’re turning for home ? Rumours Putin has been busily making sandwiches and homemade lemonade for the Wagner troops are not yet confirmed .

didn't he say he was against the war in Ukraine ? I'm sure he did at some point
He's already stated just yesterday, that the Russian people were conned into this war with Ukraine, by a bunch of lies. If he means that, then he has no need, or legitimacy to continue the war..

Thus far the only bona fida footage appears to be Wagner troops chatting with locals and queuing for coffee in Rostov .
YP appears to have called Putin’s bluff and this makes VP look weak I’d say .

I'm not sure a bloodbath in Moscow would have been good news.
Putin's bought time IMO. His credibility in his own country has dropped large time IMHO.

On the plus side I’ve read today that the Ukrainians have ferried some tanks over the Dnieper near the Antonovsky bridge and are engaging Russian forces there. Sounds like trying to make a bridgehead during the confusion.

Kyiv Independent:
Prigozhin says Wagner will stop march on Moscow.
"Realizing our responsibility for the (possible) spilling of Russian blood from either side, we are withdrawing our columns (marching on Moscow) and going back in the opposite direction to field camps according to our plan," Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin said.

Kyiv Independent: Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko claimed he had held talks with Prigozhin, after which Wagner’s boss announced the mercenaries’ retreat, according to Lukashenko’s press service. Lukashenko also claimed that Wagner was negotiating a deal that would envisage security guarantees for the mercenaries.

So if the military weren't pulling up any trees to stop this march on Moscow where does this leave the Ukraine situation? How motivated are they to follow Putin's orders? What happens to Wagner troops after the backdown?

No idea
The idea that this won't affect Russia negatively is for the birds
Putin looks weak, Wagner look weak, The Russian Air Force reputation (already not great) is in tatters and the Russian army looks like it can't be relied on
Only winner here is Ukraine and the West

another muchacho, unfortunately.
back to the land of the living and the massive cynic in me thinks this could be a strategy-gone-wrong for the impaler.
the narrative early on was that prigozhin was trying to create a divide between shoigu and putin. could this have been (poorly) masterminded by the latter as a possibly stairway for de-escalation?
or have i read too many frederick forsyth books?

Crossed my mind that Putin and his cook had concocted this to try to draw the west into open war… giving Putin the moral ground in Eastern perspectives.

ROB LEE:
I think the catalyst for this was the move by the MoD to force all PMCs to sign contracts with them, which likely had Putin's support. There might be a short-term compromise or truce, but I don't think things can go back to normal after this.

Funny you should say that, just re-reading "The Day of the Jackal" and "The Odessa File" is one of my favourite books
I think we in the West just can't see what Putin and Russia get out of this - there isn't an end game that results in a Russian win
But in Russia, they convince themselves that the West is weak, they look back on the lies they told themselves about WWII (and still believe today), and believe that they will win
And if you look at the pro-Russian accounts on twitter - collapse of the dollar, the BRICS nations taken over, its all there
Delusional doesn't even begin to describe it

You forget that you are looking at it from a rational position. Putin has been telling Russia from the start it was the West wanting to destroy Russia…

How would an internal struggle in Russia draw the West into open war? Completely counterintuitive.
