32 appearances. Decent enough goal ratio but really....twice as much as we paid for Gray two years ago? I know there is inflation but it is pretty clear that the Championship and Premier League are two of the most over-priced markets for players.Tall Paul wrote:It wasn't even half a season though.

He's just under a 1 in 2 ratio striker in the championship.

Agreed there are plenty of prolific strikers in the foreign market that would jump at the chance to play in the premier league . Even if it is just a stepping stone move that helps us for a couple of seasons to establish ourselves in the premier leagueforzagranata wrote:32 appearances. Re: Britt Assombalonga
In would be very surprised if he went to Boro' as it would show a real lack of ambition on his part. Assombalonga surely wants Prem football and I think the Boro' storey is a fake news item being put out by their local press.
I think it is interesting we are being linked with Jenkinson as part of our offer is Darikwa and I haven't heard that our latest bid on Assombalonga has been rejected as it has gone a bit quiet. Sean Dyche said himself that there were a couple of possible deals bubbling under and they were dependant on other things happening elsewhere so this could be one of them. A deal on Assombalonga could free up the Gray situation as well as Darikwa, allowing Gray to West Ham with a possible Snodgrass in. So a lot of things may depend on the Assombalonga deal and I can't see us not having upped our offer above the reported £8m plus Darikwa.
It seems Watford are preparing a £10m bid which suggests it wouldn't take much above that to succeed. This suggests that Boro' wouldn't be offering much more than this and I still believe that £10m plus Darikwa plus add ins that take it to £12m plus Darikwa would seal it. I also believe that is what we will do especially if Gray is wanted by West Ham at around £15m.

Re: Britt Assombalonga
Signing for Boro says the Sun. £14m and £60k a week wages.
So he'll be earning in the Championship about £20-25k a week more than our highest earners.
It would have been problematic to have signed him. If you're Gray or Vokes you'd be looking at thinking "he's not that much younger than me and I've got a better track record....but he's on double my wage?".

If that is the level of wages afforded to a striker in the Championship then Andre Gray will definitely be wanting away to maximise his earning potential from a relatively short career.

For Middlesboro read Fulham the other year when they signed Ross McCormack.
It's funny how the media go on about Steve Gibson being the best chairman in the league. Their spending borders on the indiscriminate, yet they won four games in the Prem. Is that good chairmanship?
The problem with this is that it legitimises Gray's wage demands. Keep Andre till Jan and see how Danny Ings recovers at Liverpool.

Nice to see Boro working to a strict budget again. £60k a week is at least £35k a week too much for this lad.

Unfortunately as we see time and time again "can afford" is not a term that necessarily applies to football clubs. With the average wage in Britain falling in real terms, football continues to exist in a parallel universe. Its going to be quite a bump when the worlds finally collide.Reecey1987 wrote:Just shows what were up against if i club in the championship can afford to pay somebody 60k a week thats crazy money

Re: Britt Assombalonga
At the moment football is getting away with it, by appealing to corporate and courting the notoriously fickle higher middle class. Those traditional supporters who are still hanging onto their teams coat tails are doing so at the cost of other things... I actually know one family that lost their house paying for season tickets but unable to afford both the tickets and their mortgage (stupid of them I know).Firthy wrote:I wonder if at some point, the genuine fans will stop attending because of the money involved or do you think most don't care as long as their team is doing well.
However there are signs that the real world is finally catching up.... I suspect the massive increase in spending again this season is literally betting the ranch and going all in to use gambling parlance. The tax ruling at Rangers will soon have massive repercussions and I'll be amazed if and when the fallout when it comes does not only take out several clubs, but will possibly lead to quite a few gaol terms for tax avoidance.
Re: Britt Assombalonga
I doubt it when you consider where he signed from and when. I'd be surprised if he's on more than £20k a week to be honest.Reecey1987 wrote:I bet he's on 30+ were he his now
He's a good player but he's not proved he's fully fit yet. He only completed 90 minutes about 10 times last season, in around 30 appearances. That suggests to me he's not quite where he was pre injury yet. There's every chance he could breakdown after a dozen games this coming season. Silly money.

He signed a new contract last year, you would think that would have been on improved terms. As the journalist from the Nottingham Post says, Assombalonga has the final say and Prem football may trump Boro's salary offer.jlup1980 wrote:I doubt it when you consider where he signed from and when. I would like to think so, but Dyche did say at least one player chose money over top flight football to remain in the Championship last summer.claretandy wrote:He signed a new contract last year, you would think that would have been on improved terms. A sad indictment of the modern game.
Re: Britt Assombalonga
If he takes the cash in preference to playing in the Premier League then that will say a lot about him.
Of course the same will apply if he plumps for Burnley or Watford and playing in the Premier League as opposed to just seeing £ signs

As far as I'm aware we have been negotiating with forest on a continual basis for a week or so. I guess that is agreeing fees up front, add on payments, discussing potential player exchange as part of the deal, getting potential exchange players to discuss a move. Quite a few ducks to line up if the deal is taking that shape and involving another player going the other way.
Interesting form the local Forest journo & refreshing to hear Brit would prefer the challenge of playing top level football rather than the money.
also, I understand that there has been no inquiry about Gray from any club. All speculation is his agent talking it up as his client enters last year of his contract and putting prospective feelers out. At the moment though, he is not going anywhere.

With the amount of stupid money footballers are getting paid it has to stop being just about money and the desire to play in the top flight has to come into the equation at some point and IMO opinion this is one of them.
