So if the figures quoted are anywhere near true we’ve made around £20m profit. Impossible to turn down really.

Re: ARTICLE: Odobert leaves for Spurs
Gutting we won't see him play for us again, bags of potential with a great career ahead of him.
In reality though, we both needed to shift some players and make some profit in this window. He most likely he had a relegation release clause which has been activated by Spurs (hence it going through so quickly).
All the best to him. Hope he has a great career (and a complete stinker if he ever plays against us

Let's also not forget in 12 months time hopefully, we need players like this for the Premier League, as we certainly won't have the cash to go and buy them. His pace will, more than anything will be a massive blow, I just hope we've received a huge fee with a ridiculous amount of extras and add ons.

Re: ARTICLE: Odobert leaves for Spurs
He's 19 and you can always want more but I believe it is a fair deal.
I assume (hope) the total will get to £40m including add ons.
We paid £10m for him 12 months ago and tripled our money plus we get a decent sell on in future if he goes onto be a world beater.
All good in my opinion.
Now get JBL back and that would make it the prefect deal.

If Sander Berge and O’Shea also depart in this window it will probably be fantastic for the Balance Sheet but will be a disaster for the Team Sheet and seriously damage our prospects this campaign.
Good luck to Wilson at Spurs but I can imagine his game time may be limited this season.

Berge Odobert and O’Shea would be the last 3 players I would want us to sell. Apparently Man U are still in talks re Berge can’t O’Shea staying. I’m sure Pace is a happy man unlike me !!!

He had Trippier on toast on his debut at SJP last year, let’s hope he now makes it big.
Re: ARTICLE: Odobert leaves for Spurs
Presumably this breaks our outgoing transfer fee record.
Re: ARTICLE: Odobert leaves for Spurs
Where are the dudes who mocked me a week or two ago when I said that he would go for 30m to 40m
I am always right!

Re: ARTICLE: Odobert leaves for Spurs
Keeping your best talent when you’ve been relegated is nigh on impossible. Look at all the players that left two years ago. At least this time we seem to have got good value and have none of our saleable assets walking away for free.

It's been this way in all the years I've followed Burnley, & always will be.
The disappointment never diminishes when it happens though.
As has been mentioned, at least he's not been here long enough to become ingrained in the club like Ralph was.
And Dobo ..... Taff ... Skippy .... Stevens ... too name just a few.

Sign a player, play him 30 times, sell him for 3x the amount. That's not just the model, that's superb.
We will be absolutely fine without him. And to be honest, while it was clear he was about to have a great season for us, I'm not convinced of what he contributes to Spurs or when his chance will come.

You've not taken this very well have you

I'd still be confident of top two even if we sold all 3 for circa £70-80m, hope we don't though obviously.

My thoughts too. Maybe that is in the thinking? There is a talent there, but like many last season, he looked lost and void of direction. There will be a reason he was nicknamed “the Swiss Messi”. Hopefully, we’ll get to see some of that this season.

Are you new to football ? It happens every year that relegated clubs relegated lose some of their better players

Confirmation our business model can work, £20m+ profit.
Koleosho is the better player if he stays fit. Thanks for the fun Wilson.

Re: ARTICLE: Odobert leaves for Spurs
A real blow. I thought he looked quality against Luton and the type of player who would get us out of this division. We can’t afford to sell off too many top players at once. We can’t just expect to replace the likes of Odobert, Berge and OShea with Ramsey, Massengo and McNally and expect to be anywhere near as competitive.
Re: ARTICLE: Odobert leaves for Spurs
Let down by the board? It's proof that the business plan is working. Buy low, sell high. For a club likes ours it's about as sensible a model as possible. Disappointing we've lost a good player, but we have others. Food chain of football.Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Fri Aug 16, 2024 10:38 amAbsolute nonsense selling one of our top players let's hope we have a 25% sell on and a £20m fee .I feel similar to I did years ago when Ralph Coates left , let down by our board.

Re: ARTICLE: Odobert leaves for Spurs
I'm presuming there will be a business plan for this (and every year) which starts with projected (required?) income. I assume selling players like Wilson for what may be above the value the club may have had on him, means we are much closer to achieving budgeted income for the year. In turn, this, I hope, means there is less pressure to sell any other key players - pick your own players that fit into this bracket - and actually is good news.
So, whilst this is, in some respects, a bit sad and even though we may well still have to reduce the squad size, we might be already down to releasing those who, quite frankly, aren't seen as good enough, given the high fee we appear to have received for Wilson.
Overall, from me, not bad news if my assumptions, above, are vaguely correct.

Re: ARTICLE: Odobert leaves for Spurs
For the 64 years I've supported this club, and, indeed, for most, if not all, of the club's history, selling players to balance the books has been the business model. The list of sales, especially those of supporter favourites, is very long.
Sadly, all too often we didn't have players anyone wanted to buy!
Sad to see Wilson go, but he will be a good PL player at a decent PL side.

It’s a good fee but hard to feel enthusiastic when the funds are repaying debt that the club didn’t have before this ownership.

Re: ARTICLE: Odobert leaves for Spurs
It's an essential point of our club's current business plan, that if you borrow big money to buy players for the PL, then you need to recoup big money by selling them when we get relegated. (Obviously the best option would be for the owners to repay the £115m interest free loan that they owe the club, but I don't think that is the intention!)

Re: ARTICLE: Odobert leaves for Spurs
I'm gutted by this news as I think he would have been sensational for us this year. However those saying "If we'd kept him his value would increase" need to bear in mind that a player is really only one bad injury away from serious reduction in value . If we've got even £25m for him then I can see why we've sold....but we have to keep Koleosho now !!

Re: ARTICLE: Odobert leaves for Spurs
Looks like an offer we simply couldn't refuse so in that sense I can reconcile myself to this, but it's undoubtedly a blow but cushioned by the fact we've got so many options that should be good enough for the Championship. But we need to look forward to an hopeful PL return- if we do pull it off this season then this sale makes life harder for us 12 months down the line.

Re: ARTICLE: Odobert leaves for Spurs
Nobody seems to know the actual fee. Range seems to be 25-37 m Also it sounds like we paid 10-12m for him but was there a sell clause. Almost certainly there would be. So actual profit could be as little as under 10 mill or as high as 27 mill. One of those numbers is really bad. One very good

I’m ok with that if the fees are as reported by the French. Not irreplaceable and plenty of cover in his position. Hope it means there is less pressure to sell other players who are more important to us in terms of our goal of getting back into the Premier League.

One thing this does highlight is that this lot seem to be able to work quietly away in the background, behind all the smoke, mirrors and noise of the transfer market, then come up with a complete surprise like this. Should we expect more of the unexpected? Nobody seemed to have the faintest clue about this. It makes all the speculation about the lad going to Ipswich a bit of a giggle.
