Precisely! Last night is part of the chaos ensuing from the referendum. At least there should now be a chance of a softer Brexit rather than the absolute car crash May was leading us to.

We all get what we vote for.

What we voted for is uncertainty, argument and turmoil.

Corbyn obviously lost the election despite being able to mobilise a 72% young person turnout, which is impressive and important. Those young people's views can't be ignored despite their nativity and inexperience (not so much on Brexit, I can see where they come from there, but on complex economics, where experience even for the uneducated means a lot). The right thing to do is thus to make life easier for young people, which primarily is real terms increase in wages and making housing affordable.

May didn't win it but won it more than Corbyn, claiming far more votes than Cameron in either England, Wales or Scotland. She upped the vote share despite the total vote going up due to the young people. So I don't get the argument that she doesn't have a mandate, more that she has weakened authority in the Tory party and faces a battle to get votes through the commons.

If I was sat on the Tory 1922 committee I'd encourage this approach:

1. Keep May as leader but ensure she doesn't fight another election. That is not her talent, it is now clear.
2. Pursue Brexit as before, ensure free movement is ended but offer compromises on things like rights of EU citizens here now, paying a fair price for a future free trade deal and don't become a low tax haven. If the Tories conclude that thinking of leaving the single market has cost them votes, they are wrong. It was populism and charisma.
3. Domestic policies to take on elements of Corbyn's proposals without breaking the economy, as well as some of her own manifesto.
4. Drop the toxic stuff to her own voters like triple lock, social care and tax rises.
5. Move Ruth Davidson somewhere difficult like home office (a shame if she is only a MSP, I wasn't sure)
6. Ensure May embraces wider ideas not just what comes out of Nick Timothy's gob.
7. Plan for a successor, someone charismatic and Brexit focused who knows how to win elections against a populist opponent. Yes. It has to be him.

Like many I have a dilemma now. I voted Corbyn tactically to get the treacherous Clegg out, which worked. Good riddance. Shame you don't get that gold plated EU pension you crave for.

If Corbyn got in though we were all set to leave the country to avoid the economic chaos and robbing of our life savings (inevitable, especially when the economy tanks). I have a conference call with an overseas jurisdiction later this morning where I was contingency planning to negotiate residency (challenging after 2 hours sleep!). At the moment we are in limbo, if I was guessing we'll stay and see how it pans out, I think Tories got just enough seats to stop him.

I'm not sure who has lost or what we all stand for. I'm for a full but not hard Brexit, but against most things in Mays manifesto. Similarly I was against most things in Corbyn's manifesto too, but one or two things were attractive.

There may be a way we all win out of this but I'm not sure what that is.

I suspect the Tories will decide she is in a job above her skill set and Boris will replace her and a new election in the autumn will seek a new mandate. Whether that is a win for anybody or not, I have no idea. May was just right of centre so her not implementing her policies (e.g. upping the tax threshold) may not be welcomed by Labour voters if a more right wing successor rewrites the manifesto in 3 months.

Not any more it isn't.
As late as 36 hours ago May reaffirmed that this was all about hard brexit.
Nearly 60% of the country disagreed with her, and let's remember - 3 million weren't allowed to vote, and as EU citizens - whose future in UK was not guaranteed by May, they would have joined that 60%.
Anyway. It would appear that the price of DUP cooperation is single market, soft border and free movement.
Some big decisions for the Tory hierarchy.

Quite possibly, but I'm still not sure what hardline means. There are hundreds of issues on the table with Brexit, we only focus on the three or four high profile ones like SM and FOM.

I want an end to free movement above and beyond the single market issue, but ideally I would have a free trade agreement and single market access too. Nobody can say we can't achieve that by making concessions on some of the other 200-300 issues (like budgetary payments). It's an unknown.
