Re: Ashes Second Test
Brilliant drama, England would have a chance if it wasn’t for the cheating (which I view exceptionally poor etiquette and sportsmanship to be). Technically in the rules but nobody does it.
Worse than diving in football for me, more akin to handling it into the net and claiming it was a header.

This has been brilliant from Stokes.
A mountain still to climb but you just never know if he stays given what we’ve seen before from him.

even the long room giving it to the Aussies!!
Re: Ashes Second Test
He's been oustanding no matter what happens from here. His instinct to significantly up the pace at exactly the right time is impressive. His mental strength in these situations is unbelievableClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Jul 02, 2023 1:17 pmThis has been brilliant from Stokes.

Re: Ashes Second Test
Imagine how many less runs we would have to get if half of our team hadn’t got out to the short ball in the first innings!
Re: Ashes Second Test
Yep, stumped, not run out…… Bairstow should know better and he can’t hide behind the fans calling the Aussies cheats.

Re: Ashes Second Test
They say the ball wasn't dead, so why had both umpires turned away from the action?
It is out by the way, because the 3rd umpire has took over.

Re: Ashes Second Test
What I find amazing is what feels like the entire commentary team feeling the dismissal was warranted (we all agree it was legit, but warranted is another matter), while the members clearly have a different view.
Bairstow being silly and Aussies being cheats can both be true.
Feels like professional sport is losing its etiquette, the money and glory is now so huge, we see it in golf with them negotiating free drops when it is obviously unfair, we see it in football, we see it in cricket. It’s simply a bad example for all our kids, for whom sport will probably be an evening pastime after a hard days work, to be done with a smile and good etiquette.

Re: Ashes Second Test
Sky showing the "example" of De Grandhomme getting out when he had literally set off for a run as if it was some kind of comparison to this was utterly bizarre. I can see why they might not want all their commentators saying "this match has been deeply impacted by bad behaviour" because it's a product they've got to sell but they shouldn't insult viewers' intelligence like that.CrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Sun Jul 02, 2023 1:32 pmWhat I find amazing is what feels like the entire commentary team feeling the dismissal was warranted (we all agree it was legit, but warranted is another matter), while the members clearly have a different view.

Re: Ashes Second Test
The fact that both Umpires had turned away indicates that they regarded the ball as dead, appalling from the Australians ...
You'd think with the recent " Sandpaper " incident, they'd have more regard for the rules and spirit of the game but clearly not, and I go back to the " underarm " incident ...

Maybe, maybe not; the thing for me though was how quickly Bairstow was leaving his crease almost before the ball had hit the keepers gloves?!alwaysaclaret wrote: ↑Sun Jul 02, 2023 1:34 pmPerhaps he is, but no other team would have done that.

Re: Ashes Second Test
I fully expect Broad to try and Mankad one of the Aussie openers first ball of the next Test.
The gloves are off now.

Re: Ashes Second Test
I think that this is a negative outcome of commercialised, professional sport that ultimately cultivates a win at all costs mentality. See performance enhancing drugs, gamesmanship, blatant cheating to win decisions/games; it won’t go back to what sport was initially created for, which isn’t all a bad thing.CrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Sun Jul 02, 2023 1:32 pmWhat I find amazing is what feels like the entire commentary team feeling the dismissal was warranted (we all agree it was legit, but warranted is another matter), while the members clearly have a different view.

Re: Ashes Second Test
I can think of one major Test playing nation who would have done so, and it's not India ...

Re: Ashes Second Test
I guess your point of view depends if you're a sporting or win at any cost kind of person. It's nothing new in sport, we've seen it in many sports ie Maradona hand of god, Schumacher taking out Damon Hill etc.

Was exactly what I thought, clearly put he's toe down to say I'm in my wicket, wasn't attempting a run, play over in my book, although very stupid against these cheats because they'll try everything.Les Lawrence wrote: ↑Sun Jul 02, 2023 1:35 pmThought Jonny scraped his boot in his crease to show he. was in . I do get the feeling sometimes that we as a nation are almost unique in how we attack our own. Whilst naive from Bairstow, it’s very poor sportsmanship.

Just shows how different attitudes are to football. I'd say every supporter who watches Burnley couldn't care less about sportsmanship as long as we win.daveisaclaret wrote: ↑Sun Jul 02, 2023 12:45 pmThis may sound bitter but if the Aussies don't want to play a sporting game of cricket we should simply stop playing them.
