I don’t know how you’re still missing the point, I don’t care that Brownhill has gone but he needs replacing. Where is that replacement? Ekdal is not a new signing.
The point is that you've slagged Brownhill, along with other players, countless times, so you ought to be less bothered about his replacement. No idea why you're referring to Ekdal in the context of my post - I was referring to the new signings with many of them obviously not ready to start today, or when they do suggesting patience.

Strange match. After a horrible opening 10 minutes culminating in their opener I thought we grew in confidence and played well.We got into a lot of good positions and weren't shy to pull the trigger which is encouraging. But there was a real lack of quality in and around the box, most notably summed up by Walker's overhit ball across the box to Anthony and Hannibal chopping the ball back instead of shooting.

Lots of cause for optimism, but some concerns. Dubravka didn't do enough to prevent all three goals, Ekdal just isn't quick enough for this level - even with the pace of Walker and Esteve either side, if one of those decides to dive in and miss a challenge on the halfway line he is left isolated. And most importantly, where are the goals going to come from?
I agree with most of that but I don't know what else Dubravka could have done, unless I missed something?

I think he was slow to get across his goal for the first two, and the second his arm wasn’t even fully outstretched. Both very good finishes but not near the corner of the goal. The third goal is a 1v1, so whilst I don’t think he should have saved it, he made himself smaller and presented Johnson with a better opportunity. It’s the kind of chance we saw Trafford save numerous times last season.

Can’t believe the negativity already ,what did folks expect 4-0 to us ? Get a grip.
Not read the start of the thread but I bet the same posters ruined it again as soon as the lineup was announced.

That's why Trafford is playing for Man City. Virtually irreplaceable within our budget, the drop in ability something I reckon we have to accept.

Of course. That’s why I said I didn’t expect him to save it. My concern, admittedly based very aprematurely on just the one game, is that we may have signed a goalkeeper that doesn’t save shots that he shouldn’t save. And I think we definitely need one of them to have a chance of staying up.

At least it wasn't 5.

And it's still a nice ground.

I'm certainly not disagreeing with you.
I felt that if we were obliged to sell Trafford then we should have looked to spend every penny (or more than) that we eventually received on his replacement.

I don’t think a £30m+ goalkeeper would sign for Burnley!

After re watching the goals, it surprises me how little people are talking about Esteves performance.

At fault for the 1st and 3rd. Ekdal recieved a lot of stick throughout the match thread and player ratings but on second viewing Esteve really struggled.

I think it was probably esteves poorest game for us but I don’t think Ekdal played well either, it seemed had the role of marking richarlison and seemed to be nowhere near tight enough, just imagine what Haaland would do to him.

I agree with all of the above. Watching the match highlights Esteve really struggled positionally, got to wonder whether the three at back system suits him.

The third goal he’s almost playing in midfield which is why Walker and Ekdal were so stretched. Even the first I think Ekdal should have done better but Esteve after giving the ball away was just in no man’s land, stuck between pressing the winger and getting back into shape.

That’s going to have to be worked on in training for sure

Yeah the first one is a really sloppy attempt of a pass from esteve.

Against lazio esteve seemed fine with the system.

I know Tuanzebe played right back most of the time for Ipswich but I see him playing centre half for us in Ekdala position once he’s fit.

After today there’s a lot of comments about needing another centre half. We need to let Delcroix, Worrall and maybe even Ekdal and then not register Beyer because we can consider bringing another cb in.

Michael Oliver wanted to follow the rules with the new 8 seconds.

Now should he not of blown before the 3rd goal with esteve holding his face. By the law it’s a head injury.

I just hope it's not simply the case that Esteve might not be as good at this level as people had expected.

Don’t think Esteve had an head injury .we’re clutching at straws trying excuse our defeat ,it was down to Spurs knowing where the onion bag was,and us unable to hit a bull’s arse with a banjo.

I felt Esteve (who I adore) was our worst defender today and in my player ratings (I was first up today) I gave him a 5. He was wobbly and those Sours rumours earlier in the summer may have affected him.

On the flip-side I was a bit harsh on Anthony, probably rated him 1.5 too low, he was one on 2nd viewing did better than I first thought (still not great mind).

Ultimately it won’t be defence that costs us this season, the way we set up, it will be attack.
