Excellent report, yes queuing at the 2 away supporter turnstiles was abysmal. I got in the ground at 3.06pm, far too many stairs for a 77 year old, Metro train ran out at Heworth but nevertheless a brilliant day. I can even see myself on the photo!

A couple of comments:-

Firstly, the Sunderland fans. I've never had anything other than a friendly welcome from them. As you say, the pubs are not segregated and you can always have a good chat about football with the
locals. Newcastle is exactly the same ( although some of the Geordie away fans can be unpleasant). Middlesbrough, on the other hand, is less friendly.

Secondly, Ashley Barnes. I have to say I don't want to see him starting a League game again. This isn't because I don't like him, but rather because I do. It's clear he's not up to this any more, and he doesn't fit into our system, and I want to remember him at his best. I 'd hate it if the crowd started getting on his back .

Thank you, re Barnes he just doesn't fit in with our pass and move system we have totally changed and he cannot adapt his game and we aren't going to change our style to suit him. Great player for the club in the past but he has been on a downward trajectory for quite a while and perhaps a team that he would fit in with would be best for him now. He'll have more chance of getting fixed up in January then he would at the end of the season when numerous players are out of contract.

Incredible that Barnes became the whipping boy for our feeble first half showing. He is struggling to adapt but some of his team mates left a lot to be desired for the hosts being 2-0 up at the interval.

As a lot around me was saying at half time, it would have been easy to have made all 5 crusting the break after the first half

The fact that only one was made, and it wasn’t Jay, shows that Vinny knows better than we do

Yes Barnes blameless for 1st half performance, received the ball with back to goal, defender up his a..e and no support. Benson made big difference in the 2nd half with Tella down the middle.

He offers no out ball, can’t hold the ball up, falls over and this all results in the ball constantly coming back at us. It has happened almost every sub appearance too. Blackpool home, Cardiff away spring to mind. Doesn’t suit the system at all unfortunately and badly needs replacing.

Yes he wasn’t the only poor performance in the first half but we are far better without him on the pitch.

Well said , totally true. VK obviously was confident with the change of Benson for Barnes , change in tactics and a blast of Benson and the jets from the tannoy it would give us a way back in.

Sorry very much a spent force, been a disaster all season apart from a decent performance at Huddersfield.

Although a current season ticket holder I can’t get to matches now as I have no transport and live over 100 miles away in Lincoln.
