ICONIC moments in football that you’ve seen live!
We’re not talking Robbie Blake v Manchester United here, we’re talking absolutely iconic moments in football.
Beckham’s halfway line goal against Wimbledon
Owen’s goal against Argentina
Giggs goal in the cup semi-final against Arsenal
René Higuita‘s scorpion kick
Eric Cantona’s kung-fu kick
…this type of thing. I know us Burnley fans get around, so who knows, we may have someone that perhaps saw Zidanne’s headbutt in the World Cup Final.
Keep it iconic!

Re: ICONIC moments in football that you’ve seen live!
I suppose for me it was no more than a friendly at Sheffield Wednesday back in the early 1970s when they played Santos. It gave me the opportunity to see Pele live. As I approached the ground, and it was played on a Wednesday afternoon and still attracted a full house of over 50,000, I bumped into Brian Miller. He just told me he'd never seen Pele live and this was his chance to.

Re: ICONIC moments in football that you’ve seen live!
As a teen in the south west in the 90s/2000s I was surrounded by Man Utd fans so travelled with them to a few games. Saw Rio Ferdinand’s first game back after his ban for the missed drug test and Rooneys hatrick on his debut against Fenerbahce in the champions league. Also at the Liverpool game where Gary Neville was caught goading the Liverpool fans and a couple of games where Ashley Cole and Cristiano Ronaldo had some of the best duels I’ve ever seen on a football pitch either live in person or on tv.
However, the best I’ve seen live was Paterson’s thunderbolt at Reading. Best atmosphere I’ve ever been a part of.

Can't recall now what year it was (mid/late 60's?
and Burnley were playing Man United at the Turf.
George Best had the ball and was racing down the wing
with John Angus back pedaling in front of him.
Best played the ball between Johns' legs and shot off
round Angus down the wing.
But Angus was back pedaling that fast that he keeled over
backwards and his arse landed on the ball.
He jumped up and was looking round not knowing
where the ball was. Best had already passed him and was a good
few years in front before he realised that the nutmeg hadn't come off.
We all shouted to Angus
"It's there, it's there. between your legs!"
Angus looked round for a whiie and then blindly lashed it up the wing
and it turned out to be the perfect ball for our winger who's name I can't recall.
He crossed it and it came out and we scored.
Not 100% certain we scored from it but the first bit I recall very well.

I was lucky enough to be at the World Cup
Final in South Africa. When Blatter and his fellow criminals appeared they were roundly booed.
But then, Nelson Mandela came onto the field. The contrast with the welcome he received was huge. It may have been one of his last public appearances as he was very frail, but it was inspiring to have seen him.

That was in our first Third Division season I think and it might have been the home game against Hull.
Another one almost similar, but he missed corner flag and fell on the ball - just look at Joe in his wheelchair behind him, clearly enjoying it.

Re: ICONIC moments in football that you’ve seen live!
The strange thing about that goal was that it didn't relegate them. City beat United that day but even had United won they would have still gone down, they were six points from safety.GordonvaleClaret wrote: ↑Sat Jul 26, 2025 9:33 amDenis Law's back heeled goal at Old Trafford to relegate United.

Re: ICONIC moments in football that you’ve seen live!
Along with members of my family I attended the last ever game played on Christmas Day in this country. The Year was 1965 and prior to that no football had ever been played on Christmas Day since 1957. The game was a re-arranged one between Blackpool and Blackburn Rovers which had been abandoned a few days earlier.
Early afternoon on Christmas Day and my dad, brother, Uncle and cousin and me jumped in the car and made our way across to the coast on a whim really. Good match, good result of Blackpool 4 Blackburn 2.
Why they decided to re-arrange for Christmas Day I've no idea. Football was really affordable then because the following day our same group went to Stoke who beat us 3-1 on an icy pitch.

Re: ICONIC moments in football that you’ve seen live!
Yer JD that's the one .
Kind of a long story but will cut it short i travelled by myself without tickets but picked them up for all Irish games . When we knew we were to play Romania in genoa after the Irish had drawn with Holland
That time I was camping and i must have been in a crew of about 30 of us by then and we all meet up at the stadium to get tickets , only half of us got the very cheap ones and the other half got the next price up .
We all planned to meet at the corner of the ground at the end of the game and head back to another camp site win or lose . We did all meet,it was something hard to describe the joy of that moment .
That time Ireland had never been to a World Cup and it was all so new for everyone .

Was there for the Man U v Arsenal game where Ruud Van Nistelrooy won and subsequently missed a penalty, to be surrounded and pushed by Arsenal players. Only thing was not being supporters of either club we started to leave before the final whistle of a poor game meaning we missed the penalty and all the drama and had to run back up to the stand to see what all the fuss was about.

I was also at the game at Old Trafford sat with the Greece U21's not too far behind the dugouts. Dimitrios Papadopoulos was sat in the row in front of us and when Greece scored all the Greeks celebrated. We just had to tell Dimitrios Papadopoulos to sit down and be quiet saying " You cannot even get in the Burnley team " and all the other Greece U21's erupted laughing taking the p**s out of him.
