I think he will keep them up. Had a tough job with us with the finances. Awful football but signed some great players for us which lead to greater things. Always has good things to say about our club too.

I think if the fans except him he could do a good job of steadying the ship there, much as he did for Burnley. I don't think anyone remembers his time here as vintage but it was necessary in order to lay the foundations for what was to follow. You cannot build without sound foundations Cotter ill will do the dirty work meticulously. That he is good at.

He's a very good league one and below manager and will keep them up but I'm not sure that is what the owners want.

Its a strange appointment.

Notts County Feb 2010 to May 2010
Portsmouth June 2010 to October 2011
Forest October 2011 to July 2012
Bristol City Dec 2013 to January 2016.

He'll last until October 2018 at best.

Two of those departures were to move on to other clubs. Was sacked virtually on day one by Fawaz whatever his name was at Forest and then sacked at Bristol City. They made a mess of the recruitment there when they won promotion for which he would have had a lot of responsibility and it ultimately cost him his job.

I know everyone knows I got on really well with him and I’m more than a bit biased but I think he could just be the right man for them and they’ve certainly been fortunate in swerving Karanka who looked the favourite for a while.

It is always a difficult job comparing managers but I doubt many would have kept us up that first year after Stan left. McGreal Duff, Hyde, Sinclair and Cahill were great signings considering the money we had at the time with the later forced selling of Blake and Chaplow.
He certainly laid the foundations for OC's success IMO. Signed Wade for free too didn't he at the end of his first season?

Karanka's record of reaching a Championship playoff final and then getting promotion the next year is streets ahead of anything Cotterill's ever done.

Right, and how many of them are from the championship to the premier league?

Which is where they are now, so its why I said he's a very good league one and below manager, and as the owners want promotion it does seem a strange choice.

He'll sort the defence out. The key for Birmingham will be knowing when to bin him off.

If I was them it would be as soon as they hit 50 points.

But Karanka has always had money to spend. At Burnley, SC had next to none. Hell, we couldn't fill the bench some matches. He is a much maligned manager. Good luck to him. I used to work with an ex-Bournemouth pro who played with SC. He said he was a great bloke.

FUN FACT: Birmingham were not in the relegation zone all season. The lowest position they plumbed was under Redknapp.

With Lee Carsley in there as well, at last Birmingham have made some decent decisions.

I thought Cotterill did a reasonable job with us under the circumstances. I always feel that his main let down is his management skills.

He comes over as being arrogant and nobody likes an arrogant person. He always appears to lose the dressing room at every club he manages.

I can't see him being there this time next year

From Redknapp to Cotterill - that's quite the change!! Good luck Steve. He didn't do much wrong at our place. Yes we had that terrible run but we were a club on a shoestring budget and he worked miracles to even put a team together some seasons. The fact we didn't drop into League 1 was an achievement in itself!

Zola won 2 of 22 when he was in charge of the league games last season and 2 of 24 including the FA cup

The "no relegations on his CV" is a misleading stat whoever the manager is. Most of the managers who were the main cause of relegation get the bullet before it's confirmed.

Cotterill will probably keep Brum up, but eventually his limitations will start to make him unpopular and he'll get the sack. That could well happen before the contract he's just signed runs out.

I recall we never did well at wolves ...until cotterill arrived and we beat em midweek 2006/7 maybe.a step in the right direction I thought.

Well I remember speaking to a current at that time pro footballer when Cotterill first joined us who said that Cotterill was not liked in the pro game and was arrogant and so far up his own backside.

The no money thing was a bit of an exaggeration. We were certainly nowhere near the highest spenders in the league but we were spending a fair bit more on wages than those at the bottom. Wayne Thomas for instance was tempted by pretty decent wages when a number of other clubs were involved and we signed plenty of other experienced players.

He'll do OK for a while in steadying the ship but I can't see him exceeding his limitations and he'll be gone in a year. Our mistake was keeping him after that period of stability, Coyle showed what a more talented manager could get out of that set of players.

A very good appointment by Brum. Stevie C is a top manager and without his stewardship we would be nowhere near where we are today. Good luck Stevie.

He came out in the press with the quality above quantity statement so I presume we had a small squad. He also said he had spent one players budget on the sports science/medical team instead.

I still can't believe looking back that at Preston after the 19th game without a win there was no talk of him getting sacked from the fans.

HR in charge three games last season including last game which he won at Bristol City. So won two out of three!

Good luck to him, deserves a proper go at the Championship. Built a squad from nothing to keep us up and might have had real success if the club hadn't kept selling his best strikers. Certainly knew how to pick a player.

Doesn't look like many were desperate to impress the new boss who was watching in the stands.

Could be 9-0-1 formation in 2 weeks.

In Birminghams current predicament, Steve Cotterill is the ideal man to keep them in the Championship, and I am sure he will succeed in doing this.
As for those who are rubbishing his time at Burnley, you need to give your heads a wobble. He was the right man at the right time for us and ensured a period of stability at Burnley FC. I wish him all the best in his new job at Birmingham City.
