Time for a new Clarets history book?

I know from reading on here that there are many others like me on this.
I have posted about this previously, maybe a year or two ago(?), and was wondering what people’s thoughts were on this? I remember getting the
Burnley: A Complete Record in the early 90’s and thought it wasn’t amazing. All that detail about our club, which despite latterly finding faults here and there still sit still on my book shelf and it referred too now and again.
We then had
The Clarets Chronicles which also gave a season by season stats page, but the commentary about each year made it better, and the weight of the book felt better quality too.
It’s 11 years this year since we’ve had an update, and no doubt would take another year (more?) to get something written by someone (Ray Simpson?), but is it time for an update considering the amazing things which have happened over the past 11 years? With renewed interest in the Clarets I’m sure demand would be higher now than the last book too.
Is there anything you’d like to see in a new book which wasn’t in a previous edition from a stats/facts point of view?
From my point of view I’d love to see Club financials (just a couple of bullet points maybe) on each season’s page, along with away followings with the attendances as we have those going back to at least 1999 now, so 19 years, and are readily available these days.
Also thinking about a recent thread on our largest away followings, perhaps a little ‘seasons facts’ bit with largest, smallest, average attendance, and perhaps a point about a big away followings, like the 13,000 at United in 1965 for the FA Cup?

I would have one and agree given the recent history it is needed

Sometimes 10-12 years (as it would be by the time it would be out) night not be enough, but so much has happened lately, and information is more readily available it seems with each passing year. I’d definitely have one too. They’d be about what, £30?
I also think that great guys, such as Ray Simpson(sorry not mentioning other Claret book writers etc), aren’t getting any younger. They must have so much information stored, or in their heads that it’s imoortant we get an update. I love all the stats stuff, and think it could be enriched quite a bit.

Not a book, but I am planning to get some more info on UTC although it will take some time.
I certainly want to include all post-war seasons with fixtures & results, league tables, programme covers and a short article season by season.
Some may have noticed but it has started - if you go to fixtures or league tables, you will find 1946/47 there. The fixtures also include the names of all the players who scored against us that season.

Tony, how about a ‘The Clarets Story’ book by the Up The Clarets team? Similar format to the Chronicles but with more detailed information? Love the season by season stuff, just more information could be added(in the book), I’m sure. Best finish since X, biggest attendance since X, profit/Loss of X, type facts.
Great work on the site by the way.

I’ll tell you what would be good, a book which could be updated. Like a Clarets Bible type thing. Updated every 5 seasons and you buy the addition for maybe a tenner. Cut production costs after the initial spend, and profitable updates for the writer?

Agree 100%. Even with the advent of the internet, you cant beat a good book like this. And agree 100% with Tim Noone. Pictures are always good too. Perhaps various sections with images, not just of on the field but off it from the time.
Maybe different sections with input from fans of their memories from certain seasons or games. And pictures to accompany it.
I mentioned doing a picture book to a publisher I know but he didnt think there would be anywhere near the level of interest to justify it. Although something like this surely would?
If its done right, with quality it would be a great keepsake.
These things are always better when the date is relevant. And this year doesnt really mark the anniversary of anything. Although next year marks ten years since Wembley and our first promotion to the Premier League (yes I know life existed before it) and the year after marks 100 years since the start of the season we first won the top flight. So maybe something to come out around then?

Picture Books: I am collecting pics from quite a few people this season, a regular half dozen or so who are contributing, a book of just this season, no action pics because of copyright but grounds and groups, faces and places, pre match, away weekends etc. But this will be privately produced just 150 copies because publishers aren't interested in this kind of stuff unless they can sell 1000+ to justify costs. Sadly a publisher I use is retiring next year. Not many Burnley books sell 1500+
Tim's newest book has, the Adamson did and the Mac biog. It's all about finding a publisher, or if you self publish finding 100+ people to pay up front to fund a small print run.

What sort of numbers would a book like the ones in the OP have sold, Rodleydave?

I don't what the Complete Record ever sold.
I might be wrong but I was told that 5000 Clarets Chronicles were printed.
Funded by advance subscriptions largely and underwritten by the club
But it took a long time to sell all copies.
All 1600 copies of NNN Vol 1 went but it took a fair while to sell out and it was funded through sponsors.
All the Charles Buchan were sold, but there were only 800.

It should load as a scrollable webpage (although the original source is Google Sheets.) There are 3 sections: non-biography, biography & other. There's also a link at the top ('Full Detailed List') to just show a simple text list of all the books.

CT, I seem to recall on the CM site that you had all the tables going back to 1800 and frozen to death as well as the results. Additionally for a number of seasons, I think one could find a result and click on the Table as it was after that result. This really allowed one to make comparisons not only season to season but at any point in a season with other seasons in the Division.
As a bit of an anorak I miss all that. Clearly a lot of work and not sure if you will have the time to repeat all that CT.

I used to like the 'On This Day' feature, which doesn't appear to be available anywhere else any longer.
Consequently, I compiled my own personal database, extracting league data from statto.com (before that disappeared) and enhancing this with results from cup competitions, sourced from wherever I could find it (notably The Clarets Chronicles book).
I've since added attendance and scorers data from 1999/00 onwards, as well as referees for this same period (eventually I hope to go back further, when time permits.)
Here's an example - there were 3 very special Turf Moor cup nights #OnThisDay 18th January in 1961, 1967 & 2005!
I am more than happy to pass on a copy of my data, in spreadsheet form to the site editor - if this might be useful, Just ask.

A bit about what was then a forthcoming publication with the Clarets Chronicles, and the author Ray Simpson. It took him a year to write.

Time to embrace technology.....! A book about an ongoing history is outdated as soon as the book is finished.
A website that was updated on a regular basis would be far better!

I don’t agree. Well, I agree that a website of facts is great to click onto (I do myself, and it’s convenient), but a book just feels so much more factual. Like someone has bothered to research and verify the facts. I would always believe that than some website which has probably regurgitated someone else’s mistakes.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned "From Orient to the Emirates". It can be a bit heavy going in places , but it is a very full and informative history of Burnley FC from just before the Orient Game to the present day. Lots of details about teams, individual players , managers. directors etc. and there are many quotes from directors, managers players press and supporters throughout the book .I was a supporter from 1960 until the late 70s and then lost touch a bit until the season that Stan got us promoted and have hardly missed a home game since. It has been fascinating for me to have many of the gaps filled in through reading this book by Tim Quelch. I would , however, have liked to see more photos, so a more pictorial record would be very welcome.

I have 2 books in my collection that do not seem to appear on the list:
Images Of Sport - BFC 1882-1968 by Ray Simpson (2000)
Defiant To The End by Dave Thomas (2015)

The 'Images Of Sport' book is there (first row, top right) - although I'm aware that it was also reissued later with a different cover.
I own Dave Thomas' 'Defiant To The End' book, which has been omitted, so I'll make sure that's included later, thanks.

Thanks BB8. I was checking from the list rather than the images and it is listed as
Burnley Football Club (1882 - 1968) which is probably why I missed it!
I also have a couple of publications, not sure if they qualify as "books":
- a 75th Anniversary publication (1964)
- Centenary Handbook (1982)
Not sure how to post pics here but will try to post scans of the covers if you are interested.
BTW great list - very useful!!!!

In the future I am planning to added an extra section for club handbooks, of which I already have a few, including the one from 1982 and some more from the 1990s. However, I don't have the 75th anniversary publication - do you have further details?

Cheers mikeS . He must of changed his life style considerably in the last 25 years !! I used to go to quiet a few away games with Eddie. One of the funniest was Tranmere away on a Friday night , it was a boring 0-0 so we left 5 mins before the end to get back in time for the Nelson poultry club . Just as we got outside paul comstive scored and Eddie had to write a report on it ! When some of the lads got back later , they described a tremendous 30 yard screamer that almost broke the net .

The strange thing about this 75th Anniversary handbook is that it marks the 75th anniversary from the formation of the league rather than the formation of the Club. The inside title page (image below) has the dates 1889

I wonder if other clubs did/had similar then? The Complete Record books certainly popped up all over the place around the same time.
