I'd say one of but the manager's role wasn't quite the same then as it is now and he was also club secretary as shown on the gravestone. Not bad though, a promotion, a cup, a league title, four successive seasons in the top four. Had we beaten Spurs in 1962 at Wembley, it would have left Harry Potts with the same record without having to win a promotion first. I'd put them alongside Sean Dyche in the top three.

I'd put him number one because of the wide range of jobs he had to do, virtually a one-man show, including the washing up. But its one of the problems of rating any of them as 'the greatest' or in a 1 2 3 order. Burnley's greatest ever player... same problem... Bob Kelly one era, Jimmy Mac another era...etc

Just that one afternoon at Wembley in May 1962. Imagine if we’d won the double that week. Haworth and Potts oversaw the two finest periods for our club.

Wow an excellent period as manager and as the previous Manager another who died very young.
Another brilliant article Tony and as others have said one of the top 3 with Harry Potts and the current Boss Sean Dyche.
One thing he certainly got right was changing the colour of our Football Strip to Claret and Blue.

Excellent read. He certainly brought great success to the club and but for his untimely death, at here might have been more.
I have no doubt that had this board been around in those days, one of the experts on players would have commented that Tommy Boyle wasn't good enough!
Good that a few years ago, his unmarked grave was given a suitable memorial.

We can only wonder what might have been if they hadn’t lost those 4 years to the war. More trophies perhaps?

You would have thought we’d have been in with a shout. The team that won the league was so close to the team that had won the cup. Probably the only thing he got wrong was sticking with an ageing team too long but a lot of managers have done that.
