He must be our shortest appointee to the manager's post apart from some interim managers whilst we made full time appointments eg Clive Middlemass

I was at that Chester game (still at Sealand Rd), wasn’t this the game where there was an allegation that Buchan was spat at?

Does anyone know what he went on to do with his life after his short spell at the Turf?

According to Wiki, he works for the PFA in Manchester, but I don't know how up-to-date that is.

Yes, I saw that. Just wondering if anyone knew what he’d been doing for the last 35 years as that’s the only info on Wikipedia.

I was at that game. Went in the stand and at full time got to the front to give the players stick as they came off the field. Peter Devine was laughing as he walked off which did nothing to defuse the situation. Our coach (Nelson Gasworkers) stayed behind until the players and management came out of the ground and continued to give them the feedback their shambolic display deserved. I think we may have delayed the departure of one of the other coaches (sorry Tony!) Not long after came the news that he had left the club. Hopefully the next appointment couldn't be as bad as this one. Could it.......????

He became promotions manager at PUMA for about 20 years according to an article I just read. Then left to become an executive at the PFA.

He left the PFA in 2017 after 17 years. I assume he's now retired. I think he went to work as a rep after leaving us.

Our coach (Nelson Gasworkers)
What a great name for a coach. Better then Jimmy Adamson, Brian Miller etc..
So what were the rumours of drinking regarding Buchan? Or can't we talk about this?

Plenty of drinking on the Gasworkers coach back in the day

Then after Heysel the government banned alcohol from coaches so as happened at Chester, we arrived in town around 3 hours before kick off! As was often the case back then, the day out, the company and the beer was far more memorable than the garbage served up on the pitch in the name of football.

I remember the Chester away game. Buchan received dogs abuse from the travelling clarets as he went down the tunnel after the match.
I felt sorry for him the abuse should have been directed to the tossers in the directors box who were leading the club to ruin

Was our last ever visit to Sealand Road. I was certainly in no rush to go back after that shambles.

One nice little story, yes it was the weekend that his appointment was announced. Remember it well, the one and only Bobby Driver rang us at home in Guisborough to announce his appointment
We were expecting Hutch to get it so was somewhat underwhelmed,
Great players don't necessarily become good managers ringing in my ear from my dad a sentence that he would repeat some years later

I for one would not have welcomed Tommy Hutchinson
Martin Buchan suddenly realised being a great player doesnt guarantee you will be a top manager and did the decent thing.

My dad was a golf professional, teaching at drive time in Warrington. In the early 90s Martin used to come In and have lessons off my dad and also enjoyed coming in and had a coffee with him (being a fellow Jock). Very nice bloke by all accounts and aparantly had something to do with puma at the time.

Sure I remember on the previous site that Buchan firstly had a drink problem and secondly that things had got physical between him and a player(s). And then he tried the same approach with Vince.....

Wasn’t Vince - and that’s from Vince himself.

Thanks for doing this managerial overviews Tony. Getting closer and closer to the time I first remember watching Burnley but it's been very interesting reading about our past managers.

And despite what some on here might want you to believe, there were a lot of them before my time too.

But not that many

You like myself will have lived through more managers than came before us.
My first manager would have been Frank Hill and i remember Alan Brown arriving and my Dad raving about him as player and then as our manager.
So my total (not counting Potts Miller or Casper twice) is 21 in 70 years with just 7 before my time and from 1894-1950 but about 12 years lost due to the wars. A real flurry of 14 changes from Adamson leaving in 76 until Stan arrived in 98 (I think). The next 22 years we have had just 6 managers and 5 from 1946 to 1970. You can almost pick the good years from the bad ones by the rate of manager changes

As a kid I thought he would be good as he had been at Man Utd for years, the innocence of youth !
I stopped having these thoughts about 35 minutes into Neil Wood's debut

Given Buchan's stature in the game, I felt at the time it was an inspired appointment. Very unfortunate how things work out but basically the story of the club in the mid 80's.

Should never have been given the job in the first place

Martin Buchan update - still lives in the Cinnamon Brow area of Warrington and a keen member of Poulton Park Golf Club. Often seen out & about on his bike or in his local The Plough. Recently retired to look after his wife Geraldine who sadly suffers from Dementia.

Very good player but pre over the point that very good players don't necessarily make good managers/coaches.
As for the Chester game, I should have been there but my mate's car broke down before we had even got out of Burnley - every cloud has a silver lining!

He had issues that forced him out rather than him being a good player who wasn't making a good manager
