goals scored divided by goals against - was like that for years

I was on that special train to Hull. I think there were around 400 on it if memory serves.

Strange how some games stand out but others don't. The Villa game played three days earlier I can remember as if it were yesterday but this game against Preston had faded from my memory.

I remember the PNE game probably because of that Dave Thomas goal. Christ, how much would he be worth now? Though its always difficult to compare the times.

Didn't go to to the Hull game, but I remember they used to have their own station at Boothferry Park, didn't they?
Very handy.

I can remember walking through the city to the ground with the 400 off the special train which was a bit surreal, but I think we caught a train from Boothferry Park after the game back to the main station.

We've moved quickly from the Preston game but there were turnstiles on the platform at Boothferry Park station so off the train and straight into the ground.

Thomas was special but he was being ruined by Adamson. The best thing he ever did was get away to clubs like QPR & Everton who got the best out of him. Wonderful talent.

I went to the Hull game on the train, I remember thinking it was a great way to travel to a football match. Ricky (Tell Laura I love her) Valance was the first Welsh man to top the UK charts: the first Welsh woman to do so was Shirley Bassey with 'As I love you' in the mid-fifties.

The same Spavin and Kelly who later owned the sports and games shop of the same name in Lancaster I spent hours in as a youngster.

I vaguely remember the Preston match. I also went to Hull on the train and the ease of getting off the train and straight into the train, seemed to be on there for waiting for the game to start, may have been wrong.

We had something similar with the Villa game as this. Brilliant bits to add to it. Alan Kelly was a very good goalkeeper for them too. He was coming towards the end by then but played around 500 games for Preston and now has the town end named after him.

Mine too. First time I'd seen us win anything. Was very special all season and the one season I can now compare it with is 2013/14, the first Dyche promotion. I'd done these articles a few years ago but am now just re-jigging them and I've just got the next one completed. I'm enjoying reading them again to be honest, not the writing but the story.

That was definitely the case with the turnstiles on the platform at Hull, remember it well. On the side of their ground similar to the Longside but not as big.

I agree with your thoughts about travelling on the train to an away game it was something special back in those days.

One of my earliest away trips by train was to Spurs for an FA Cup tie in 1966 when we lost 4-3. The same day Rovers were also away in London, West Ham possibly, and the special train was packed with both sets of fans.

I was on that train with my mate and his dad. We were in one half and them in the other half but you could walk between the two. They drew 3-3 at West Ham, won the replay and eventually lost to Sheff Wed in the 6th round.

They were, on the side opposite the main stand which at the time was a covered terrace. I think it was the only ground where you would find turnstiles on the platform, I think the station might have only been used on match days. Another feature of Boothferry Park was having six floodlight pylons, one in each corner and one either side at the half way line.
