I remember him tearing us apart on one occasion for Sheffield United. I think we were 3-0 down in the first 20 minutes. He proved to be Jimmy Adamson's downfall at Leeds, paid a lot of money for him but he wasn't good enough for them and it proved to be a bad signing.

Apparently Sheffield United signed him after failing to capture another Argentinian player. By the name of Diego Maradona.....

I recall that game well in the mid 70's and still say he put on a performance that day that was as good, most probably better in truth, as anything I've seen in over 60 years watching professional football. Simply exhilarating. Was it a one off? I don't know but definitely a performance that oozed class. RIP Alex Sabella.

It was early 1978/79 - second division. Not up to the top flight when he went to Leeds.

Only one South American currently managing in the Premier League I think and that's Bielsa.

Correct, playing for Newall's Old Boys I believe. Didn't have a very illustrious playing career and retired aged 26.

From memory he was a very clever player but was as slow as a cart horse which didn't help when he moved up a league. But we have to remember he was in the Sheffield United team that was relegated to the third division and when he went to Leeds he played less than 30 games for them. Had a friend in Sheffield at the time and he always thought his Burnley style performances came just now and again.

But that day he was absolutely sensational.
